Can you support them by providing opportunities based on their passions to develop them as people?<\/li>\n<li>Listening is very powerful. Is there anything we can pick up during this period that will be worthwhile building into future player development programmes?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>1. Group Challenges &amp; Areas of Interest<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Opportunity to learn about own leadership and explore new ideas to deal with the new norm. How are others thinking about leading athletes through a difficult period and ensure they stay motivated? How do we guide them through as a leader?<\/li>\n<li>Understanding of leadership and how to work with the players. How can I help these guys get better during this period and beyond?<\/li>\n<li>We are in an uncertain period, but elite sport is usually uncertain anyway \u2013 how can I boost my leadership to come out of this better?<\/li>\n<li>How do we keep having difficult conversations and ensuring that we are remaining on task?<\/li>\n<li>How everyone is dealing with the current situation \u2013 player development is tough, especially with the younger talent who are restricted and can\u2019t be around their families. How do you manage the split between personal and on-field development?<\/li>\n<li>How are others thinking about staff and coach development, as well as player engagement and development from a far during this period?<\/li>\n<li>Uncertainty of season dates and being able to prepare for it \u2013 how can we use everyday to our advantage?<\/li>\n<li>Planning vs being highly adaptable. A lot of scenarios will be null and void. Transition \u2013 being accustomed to being at home, so how do we transition them back after the pandemic?<\/li>\n<li>Trying to deal with the advice that you get in a leadership position regarding your staff and players. There is pressure to make them feel safe vs. the economic reality and impacts it could have on staff and players.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>2. Challenge: Supporting the athletes in being adaptive and being at their best through this \u2013 what have we learnt that works?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Checking in with people from a personal level and using this as an icebreaker. Give them the feeling that you are there to support them. If you can break the barrier, that\u2019s where you can elevate trust and vulnerability \u2013 create a space for them to be honest.<\/li>\n<li>Keep regular face-to-face contact with the players and be as transparent as possible. A lot of us don\u2019t have the answers right now, but show that level of vulnerability that you are in it with them.<\/li>\n<li>Try to give them some certainty by giving all of the athletes a schedule or a task. This is especially effective with younger talent.<\/li>\n<li>Look at this period as an opportunity, what can we make a priority now that normally would be a challenge based on your average day-to-day or week-to-week? Consider the opportunities around psycho-social, tactical development and performance lifestyle.<\/li>\n<li>Use blocks in your training to support motivation. An example could be splitting them into four-week blocks with a very specific theme, followed by a de-load week and then we revisit another four-week block around a different theme.<\/li>\n<li>Take an holistic approach of your athletes \u2013 what are they interested in? Can you support them by providing opportunities based on their passions to develop them as people?<\/li>\n<li>Be transparent whilst being optimistic.<\/li>\n<li>Daily communications with players and staff is crucial, but consider breaking this down into smaller groups. Empower the players by asking them where their opportunities are \u2013 what are their strengths and weaknesses and where do they think the game is going?<\/li>\n<li>Players\u2019mindsets\u00a0have shifted from wanting\u00a0to compete and getting\u00a0to play to now being more concerned about their\u00a0health and safety and that of their families.<\/li>\n<li>If you don\u2019t give people information, you don\u2019t give the opportunity to adapt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>3. Challenge: How are we planning and adapting around this as a leadership team? <\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First couple of weeks of the pandemic were very reactive. Now, how can we be proactive and use this to our advantage by filling the time with other projects?<\/li>\n<li>Good leadership during this period is where we are looking for the opportunities.<\/li>\n<li>Shift your approach to optimism rather than having an environment evolved around pessimism. Our job is to simply focus on what we can control.<\/li>\n<li>Focus on coming out of this as better versions of ourselves.<\/li>\n<li>Trying to make connection, purpose and personal growth, if not everyday, regularly. Consider breaking up players and staff, and putting them into committees and groups to work on certain projects.<\/li>\n<li>Empower each individual, if you were steering the ship, what changes would you make or what would you like to implement? Have an inclusive feel \u2013 it\u2019s a great opportunity to get everybody\u2019s thoughts and then debrief as a group to see what the collective thoughts are to take forward.<\/li>\n<li>Listening is very powerful. Is there anything we can pick up during this period that will be worthwhile building into future player development programmes?<\/li>\n<li>Show that you care for your staff. Showing care means saying things honestly,as they are. As long as they understand that there will be support \u2013 we must practise what we preach.<\/li>\n<li>Plan as best as you can to then respond brilliantly \u2013 that can be a performance benefit when we come out of this.<\/li>\n<li>Doing more right now doesn\u2019t necessarily mean you will come out of this better.<\/li>\n<li>Being adaptive means that you may have an assumption, but are you are willing to test and learn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>4. Five Traps to Slow Response<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Caught off-guard and overwhelmed.<\/li>\n<li>Hijacked by our emotions.<\/li>\n<li>Operating from an out-of-date mental map.<\/li>\n<li>Overly directive leadership.<\/li>\n<li>Looks for the perfect plan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>5. Five Skills Areas to Master<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choosing our response.<\/li>\n<li>Situational humility: listening, seek new voices and stay open.<\/li>\n<li>Sense making: creating a new map for ourselves and others.<\/li>\n<li>Empowered leadership.<\/li>\n<li>Facilitating learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>6. Group Outcomes<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stay connected.<\/li>\n<li>Plan the best to be the most adaptable.<\/li>\n<li>Be patient with athletes finding their way, guide them to find their motivation again.<\/li>\n<li>What is this an opportunity for?<\/li>\n<li>Being honest can provide psychological safety \u2013 \u00a0we can\u2019t always control the facts but we can control our opinion of or reaction to them.<\/li>\n<li>Plan to be the best but be prepared to adapt quickly.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s OK to not have all the answers.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Service attitude\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s OK to not have all the answers and not to pressure yourself into having the perfect plan.
