Intertwining a longer-term vision with the short-term response has the ability to influence people\u2019s motivation and focus.<\/li>\n<li>Are you creating consistent opportunities for your staff to learn? Use this time to your advantage and focus on enhancing your people\u2019s knowledge for when we return to the environments \u2013 how can that new knowledge help us?<\/li>\n<li>How much time are you dedicating to yourself? As high performance leaders, we often lean towards supporting our athletes and support staff \u2013 it\u2019s important to consider your own wellbeing and development in this current situation as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>1. <\/b><\/strong><strong><b>Group Challenges &amp; Areas of Interest<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>During this period, how are others working to keep staff motivated?<\/li>\n<li>How are others managing and thinking about their own internal uncertainty?<\/li>\n<li>Approaches of taking what we learn through this process and how it can impact the future.<\/li>\n<li>Navigating through the uncertainty of changes in guidelines from governing bodies.<\/li>\n<li>How to support the mental health and wellbeing of staff and athletes.<\/li>\n<li>How to keep staff and athletes focused during this time when it\u2019s becoming repetitive.<\/li>\n<li>Understanding ways to manage the \u2018lull\u2019 and planning for what happens next.<\/li>\n<li>How to stay connected with staff that are furloughed, or similarly staying connected if you are furloughed.<\/li>\n<li>Trying to get a better sense of what things look like for returning to play and how to prepare for that<\/li>\n<li>Managing the emotional impact and conflict, the situation brings; in-depth relationships with staff and athletes being strained.<\/li>\n<li>Ways to navigate and find what is the \u2018truth\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>How to effectively communicate with teams remotely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>2. Group <\/b><\/strong><strong><b>Learnings from the Pandemic So Far<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Try to avoid filling your day with doing things that won\u2019t be relevant when returning to play.<\/li>\n<li>Be curious and immerse yourself in learning.<\/li>\n<li>Use this time as an opportunity to listen; in high performance sport we\u2019re pretty good communicators but not always good listeners.<\/li>\n<li>Allow time and create opportunities for staff to learn.<\/li>\n<li>Being furloughed can make you feel disconnected; find inventive ways to stay connected and for managers to keep you connected; ad hoc socials, quizzes etc.<\/li>\n<li>Understand that too much communication can have the adverse effect; find the right balance.<\/li>\n<li>External communications can be a challenge when reliant on other people and organisations for what can and can\u2019t be said; sometimes you need to accept that you will be less helpful than you would like and therefore have to get comfortable with saying \u2018I don\u2019t know\u2019; more damage is done with trying to provide certainty that doesn\u2019t exist.<\/li>\n<li>There is huge value in focusing on the \u2018personal\u2019 rather than the \u2018professional\u2019 conversations &#8211; an example of 95% of calls with athletes on a personal level, creating trust and a safe and supportive environment.<\/li>\n<li>Its important to understand what each person can cope with in terms of engagement and communication e.g. some prefer calls more than others, some don\u2019t like video calls, some do etc.<\/li>\n<li>Its important to communicate clearly and consistently to key stakeholders to manage expectations and in turn manage relationships e.g. with adolescents it\u2019s about communicating effectively with parents.<\/li>\n<li>Uncertainty creates stress, so where possible try to create a vision for the future to empower, stability and motivate people.<\/li>\n<li>Focus on what you can control, not what you can\u2019t control.<\/li>\n<li>Focus on yourself as much as anyone; achieve a health work\/life balance and ensure as leaders, your energy is maintained to support others &#8211; stress takes energy.<\/li>\n<li>Be vulnerable and staff and athletes will open and feel more supported and safer.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t feel guilty if you can\u2019t seize the day everyday, you can\u2019t always be on top form.<\/li>\n<li>Get comfortable communicating reactively, as you won\u2019t and can\u2019t be proactive in a time of uncertainty.<\/li>\n<li>This time will create more trust if you invest in learning about other people.<\/li>\n<li>It will also create more honesty, at a time where we don\u2019t know the truth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>3. Outcomes<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keeping in touch with people is really important at this time. Consider the idea of optional group check-ins along with scheduled conversations.<\/li>\n<li>Focus on what you can control and know your people.<\/li>\n<li>Think carefully about the rules of communication (who \/ when \/ how \/ frequency) as it\u2019s ever important \u2013 it\u2019s OK to be honest if you don\u2019t know the answer.<\/li>\n<li>Connection is paramount. Understand the danger of over-communicating.<\/li>\n<li>Focus on people in your life or business and do the best you can now and take care of your mental health.<\/li>\n<li>Communication with people is key. We need to find new ways to communicate with people and its now more important than ever to know your athletes and build meaningful purposeful relationships with them.<\/li>\n<li>During period of uncertainty be honest, even if it means you don\u2019t know.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t fill your day unless it has an impact on moving forward.<\/li>\n<li>Know your people.<\/li>\n<li>Focus on the controllable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Could you and your team be making better use of your performance metrics?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If so, then the latest Leaders Performance Institute Special Report, <em>Analyse This: Managing Your Metrics<\/em>, will be right up your street.
