How can we minimise the potential impact of an injury crisis?How will you find the new optimal in your training environment to reduce the risk of injury upon the return to play?<\/li>\n<li>In what ways are you working to ensure the active participation and accountability of your athletes in their ongoing development programmes?<\/li>\n<li>Are you working to create an efficient framework for athlete development that respects the beliefs of the head coach while affording a degree of creativity in finding athlete development solutions?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>1. Group challenges &amp; areas of interest<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The biggest challenge is around individual players\u2019 mental wellbeing rather than physical programming. Some have experienced bereavements during the pandemic; others are struggling with high training loads because they cannot see the endpoint.<\/li>\n<li>We are keen to guard against injury upon the return of our athletes from this prolonged without competition. Where is our starting point for baseline load when there is no calendar and it feels as if we\u2019re \u2018herding pigeons\u2019? Where is the balance between minimum effective dose and ensuring the new optimum? As performance practitioners, it&#8217;s crucial we work to find the right balance &#8211; this relates back to one of the key points around an individualised approach. Everyone is operating in different environments as well, so spend time making sure you get this right.<\/li>\n<li>By the same token, this enforced absence, with competitions such as the Olympics postponed until 2021, means there could be 12 months without competition for some sports, which usually occurs when athletes are injured. In this reality, athletes can be fully fit but with nowhere to go. There is inevitably less intensity in there current fitness programmes.<\/li>\n<li>One of the greatest challenges is access to resources and facilities. Athletes in their own particular environments need help with nutrition, sleep, psychology and mental wellbeing, brain training and in the case of female athletes, issues relating to their menstrual cycles.<\/li>\n<li>What are the key decisions and thoughts processes that go into a well thought out periodisation plan? It is varies from sport to sport with different competition schedules, whether it\u2019s acute cycles for multiple, weekly competitions, or multiple competitions over an extended period of time.<\/li>\n<li>There is also a curiosity around the development of skills within the season, which is not always done by coaches. Perhaps the lockdown provides an opportunity in this area?<\/li>\n<li>NCAA rules mean student-athletes must take the initiative during the shutdown, with Zoom or Skype sessions prohibited.<\/li>\n<li>There is a risk of looking at the various components of periodisation in isolation whereas it would be more efficient and effective to bring them together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><\/b><strong><b>2. How to best return to play to ensure we\u2019re ready<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Focus on things holistically from an athlete performance point of view &#8211; we have to ensure we are covering both the psychological and physiological impacts of the current climate.In essence, this is a testing period for coaches &#8211; if you\u2019ve done a good job in educating your athletes in the principles of training then they should be coping with the physical side you should be giving them opportunities to take more control of their training programmes. There is also a good opportunity here to pull on your leadership group for a different voice.<\/li>\n<li>As regards the opportunities themselves, there needs to be an overarching structure that afford a degree of creativity where athletes can identify and work on appropriate areas of development as they see them.<\/li>\n<li>There is a lot of trial and error at this stage because no one planned for a pandemic. Importance of finding the balance of individualised approaches during this period, but also sense checking when the right time is to bring back the collective training.Some clubs are taking an individual approach until mid-May when they will re-introduce more structured, daily \u00a0group sessions. At present, there is a lot of freedom and trust placed in athletes as we have adjusted to their needs.<\/li>\n<li>Setting competitions for athletes during the work week, where challenges will be set on group calls and a leader board kept. \u00a0It could be a task that they have to work on and present back to the group. This serves as an education tool and this period enables us to share what we\u2019re doing and why we\u2019re doing it. There is a curiosity from the athletes in spite of their circumstances.<\/li>\n<li>One team has also tried to put in periods where athletes feel \u2018off the leash\u2019 and have complete autonomy over their programme, although we want them to retain respect for their chronic workload ratios. We try to do this through group calls that enable players to socialise while also checking in with staff.<\/li>\n<li>Communication is essential for developing empathy and understanding but there are some sports, such as tennis, where a season of continuous touring can last up to 10 months, and a significant proportion of players are relishing this opportunity to spend time with their families. However, players, and therefore coaches, are only able to make money when they play.<\/li>\n<li>The TeamBuildr app, a useful app at more conventional moments, can still be used remotely and be based around the specific training needs of athletes, whether they have equipment or are undertaking bodyweight exercises. It creates accountability.<\/li>\n<li>Whoop, despite concerns regarding its invasiveness, has been a useful tool for building accountability around stress load, recovery scores, and, most significantly, the necessity for sleep. These can be monitored by physios and strength &amp; conditioning coaches; it also gives the athletes autonomy. The app allows them to create groups and share their workouts, recovery scores and sleep performance. It comes into its own when the team\u2019s leadership group are able to mentor rookies. Concerns about its invasiveness are reduced when athletes can see its demonstrable value.<\/li>\n<li>Recovery scores and stress loads on Whoop are an area that needs active feedback from a kinesiologist to prevent athletes becoming number or analytic-driven.<\/li>\n<li>The Hive Learning app can be used to help deliver individual action plans, with material posted in areas such as strength &amp; conditioning, psychology, mindfulness, as well as life skills. It works well with younger athletes as one can \u2018like\u2019 something when it\u2019s posted, although it is \u2018too cool for school\u2019 with some of the older athletes.<\/li>\n<li>Growth spurts can also prove difficult, as parents can misunderstand the needs of their child athletes during peak high velocity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><\/b><strong><b>3. Good periodisation frameworks at this time<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The biggest question being asked at the minute is what\u2019s the right schedule or, training organisation? When working on creating a long-term periodisation framework, it&#8217;s crucial to ensure that you are combining the philosophy with the physiology. With this in mind, it&#8217;s incredibly important for the performance staff to work closely with the Head Coach to align values and approach.<\/li>\n<li>Once you have agreement on the playing and physiological philosophy, you need to spend time adapting and moulding your culture around the philosophy before jumping in at the deep end. The head coach or manager will set the philosophy and we must try to create a framework for decision-making around what can lead people to make really informed decisions about their training programmes; it gets you thinking about what\u2019s important and what\u2019s not important.<\/li>\n<li>A well thought out periodisation framework won&#8217;t work unless you have buy-in from the players or athletes. Make them part of the process and educate them on the reasoning behind certain elements of the plan &#8211; tell them explicitly why we will be doing this and why it will be at this particular point.<\/li>\n<li>The importance of being able to \u2018box off\u2019 the game &#8211; that post-game analysis or reflection &#8211; is a significant psychological component that\u2019s missing at the moment.<\/li>\n<li>Do not let the element of competition slip within the training plans considering the isolation period &#8211; be creative to ensure the athletes aren&#8217;t training half-heartedly, instilling an element of competition now will help with the re-introduction period.The lack of the intensity of competition cannot be escaped and there is no easy solution. On the other hand, athletes will be hungry to compete and that could lead to an injury crisis if training loads are not adjusted accordingly.<\/li>\n<li>Good frameworks also focus on and highlight the importance of intensity. If you think about a four week period, three weeks of intensity and a weeks&#8217; adaptation period is a simple but effective structure to consider.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. <i><\/i>Outcomes<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not be afraid of to give players more ownership during this period.<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring players take ownership especially with their loading and what their sleep looks like.<\/li>\n<li>Speed is a major component that cannot be delivered in our current training state. Also a common theme of how we as leaders are concerned and have genuine care for the total athlete.<\/li>\n<li>Individual approaches where the fitness\/conditioning is only one small part of the puzzle.<\/li>\n<li>Periodisation; and the main thing now is to ensure the well-being and physical preparation so they can return without injuring themselves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>What is it going to take to win in 2020?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That is the focus of our latest Performance Special Report.
