Do not lose sight of the backbone of any high performing organisation.<\/li>\n<li>Consider the three-phase model of: Response, Re-plan and Rebuild. How are you currently placed around these three concepts?<\/li>\n<li>How do we retain the key leadership qualities that we are seeing and experiencing in a VUCA world?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>VUCA: Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity &amp; Ambiguity:<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><b>1. Group Challenges &amp; Areas of Interest: Adaptive Leadership<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lots of people coming and asking around how to adapt using design thinking. How are others thinking about it?<\/li>\n<li>Leading a lot of staff across Europe, interested in understanding the bigger leadership picture. How can we prepare for what happens next when we come out of the pandemic and putting this into a strategic plan \u2013 how can we do this during the current uncertainty?<\/li>\n<li>What has worked in preparing for these situations in the past? How are we changing our ways of working in the future \u2013 how have we adapted?<\/li>\n<li>How are we all responding? Simply, adapting leadership styles.<\/li>\n<li>Living the VUCA world everyday. What is everyone else seeing in front of their noses in this totally indifferent exposure?What are we seeing from our \u2018leader leaders\u2019 that\u2019s been impressive or on the flip side, areas of improvement?<\/li>\n<li>Elements of system are being exposed, so what next for the system and how will that change the way we work?<\/li>\n<li>How has everyone on the call has adapted to lead during this period?<\/li>\n<li>What am I missing? Never experienced this situation before, so want to benchmark my plan and strategy. Dealing with lack of time structure and what is the mindset around this? Has our leadership change and adaptation in this period and what does it mean going forward?<\/li>\n<li>Check and challenge what we\u2019re doing when it comes to our strategy.<\/li>\n<li>General interest in dealing with change management. What are others putting in place? Also, how can we use this period to future proof?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>2. Leadership: What are we seeing that\u2019s good, what\u2019s bad and the view of leadership into the future. How will we need to lead differently?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A key leadership trait is vulnerability and having a viewpoint of you don\u2019t know what you don\u2019t know. Foster collaboration.<\/li>\n<li>Leadership vs. followership. In times of uncertainty, the best leaders create a sense of followership to take them on a journey with you. You don\u2019t need to know the answer, but communicate clearly to get others on the bus with you.<\/li>\n<li>Allowing for initiative to come through has been forced by this situation. We have no choice as control is low. Giving the space for others to grow that initiative is a key trait and something we need to foster and take forward after this period.<\/li>\n<li>Two different environments depending on the leader. One struggling to establish what to do because they can\u2019t see a full picture. The other accepting they won\u2019t have a full picture so are consulting to get as clear as they can and then acting.<\/li>\n<li>Interesting to see the difference in athletes from individual sports vs. team sports when it comes to control. Autonomy is a critical factor and something we need to take forward past this period.<\/li>\n<li>Create a clear vision for the future and empower the long-term goals. The situation is difficult, but the backbone and anchors of any organisation is the values and the vision. Let\u2019s not lose sight of this even though there is a \u2018short-termism\u2019 approach in most organisations.<\/li>\n<li>Being able to connect the now with the normal. Look at the things that are important to us and rearrange them and slightly rephrase how we got those messages across. If your No1 value is around competitive spirit, this isn\u2019t as relevant right now, but \u2018the power of us\u2019 or \u2018continued growth\u2019 are \u2013 so ensure you are honing in on the strongest values right now.<\/li>\n<li>The everyday working environment is very intense in the emergency services. There have been two clear categories of leaders to show during the pandemic: the calm, composed and clear leaders vs. the smoke and mirrors, those who sprinkle the fairy dust and want to keep the control versus empowerment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>3. Strategies: Scenario planning, benchmarking strategies, living in VUCA world right now and what else might we need to be thinking about?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be clear on what you know. Be clear on what you don\u2019t know. Once you have that clarity understand what\u2019s in \u2018don\u2019t know\u2019 that is critical to find out.<\/li>\n<li>How can we use this situation to reach our goals with the tools and sources we have? We perhaps have more time to delve into exploring these opportunities.<\/li>\n<li>Consider a three-phase model: Respond. Re-plan. Rebuild. A lot of organisations aren\u2019t fit for the new normal, but although we are in a response mindset, we have to look ahead to phases two and three to ensure we future proof ourselves.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018There are going to be some sacred cows shot\u2019 \u2013 what exactly is important and getting back to the core of what that is.<\/li>\n<li>Use this period to collate knowledge. As a leader, ask the hard questions and act on the questions that come in.<\/li>\n<li>Create \u2018messy networks\u2019 to get feedback on how we are doing and monitor that. Cross-reference this with your head count. It\u2019s very important to stay connected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>4. Five Traps to Slow Response<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Caught off-guard and overwhelmed.<\/p>\n<p>Hijacked by our emotions.<\/p>\n<p>Operating from an out-of-date mental map.<\/p>\n<p>Overly directive leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Looks for the perfect plan.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>5. Five Skills Areas to Master<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. Choosing our response.<\/p>\n<p>2. Situational humility: listening, seek new voices and stay open.<\/p>\n<p>3. Sense-making: creating a new map for ourselves and others.<\/p>\n<p>4. Empowered leadership.<\/p>\n<p>5. Facilitating learning.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>6. Outcomes<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Play with extremes.<\/li>\n<li>Have a clear vision of the future.<\/li>\n<li>Identification of critical priorities and make steps towards them.<\/li>\n<li>Relax, observe and make a call.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>What is it going to take to win in 2020?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That is the focus of our latest Performance Special Report.
