anxiety; frustration at the unknown; unclear communication<\/li>\n<li>Supporting individuals to grow and be resilient through this period<\/li>\n<li>Remaining resilient as an organisation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>Recommended Reading &amp; Joint Problem-Solving<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Future Thinking \/ Performance Questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Utilise your leadership team to drive motivation and positivity amongst the group. Good to hear from respective individuals in the group away from the staff.<\/li>\n<li>During this period, are you using this as an opportunity to pressure test your culture?<\/li>\n<li>How can you create a platform for players of differing experiences to share with each other<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>1. Group challenges:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How much you do give people right now, and how much you let them do themselves?<\/li>\n<li>Manipulating areas of your environment to stretch and grow people<\/li>\n<li>Ingraining resilience within a collective of people<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring athletes retain resilience they\u2019ve developed now they\u2019re home located.<\/li>\n<li>How does the system support the athlete\u2019s resilience?<\/li>\n<li>Staying resilient in delivering a message when there is pushback<\/li>\n<li>Providing some consistency through all situations, good or bad<\/li>\n<li>How do we measure and grow resilience, and what does it really mean?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Supporting Individuals to be Resilient<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There has to be an element of trust within a group to establish resilience. The training environment has to mirror the performance environment.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019re having regular virtual calls with individuals, with smaller groups and with the wider teams.<\/li>\n<li>Different groups within the wider group (servant leadership group, and positional groups. Servant leadership group is one from each position).<\/li>\n<li>Sharing daily positive messages \u2013 responsibility for this is rotated. Individuals highlight a positive the current situation has provided.<\/li>\n<li>All those who have been furloughed; it is so difficult and delicate to communicate. Some teams have approached it in terms of suggesting reading, tasks etc. to help to develop leadership skills within people. Also difficult with everyone\u2019s living situation in terms of body conditioning.<\/li>\n<li>We want them to be themselves, and express themselves in the way they want to in terms of their development. What platforms they use, how they learn, how they want to communicate (non-directive directive).<\/li>\n<li>We usually have captains for the season, but we have introduced weekly captains. Gives different people an opportunity to interact with the coaches and leadership, and expose them to those types of conversations.<\/li>\n<li>We rotate our support staff so that athletes don\u2019t develop and over-dependent relationship upon the support staff.<\/li>\n<li>Done well up to now, but with it setting in that this situation may well last a while we\u2019re going through a mapping exercise for that lull period. Moving from managing the reaction, now to the planning for the next phase e.g. keeping things interesting, fresh etc.<\/li>\n<li>Giving the athletes one session a week where they have to dig a lot deeper. Exploring how we develop the resilience within the players, and keeping them stimulated. Give them learning material and ask them to come back and present to the coaches.<\/li>\n<li>Highlight the positives. We can all get to conversations now. Previously distances were viewed as an obstacle to that. We\u2019re trying to celebrate the wins whatever they are.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Remaining Resilient as an Organisation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2018Nobody knows how much you care until you show it\u2019. Being furloughed makes it difficult to talk about \u2018work\u2019, but it gives an opportunity to focus on the person and get to know the people you work closely with more.<\/li>\n<li>Keep the process moving, otherwise there will be stagnation. Remind yourself and the group that you are still working towards an end goal. Helps to keep the process in place.<\/li>\n<li>What will make us better and in a better position when we do come back? Work towards that.<\/li>\n<li>We set weekly tasks. Get us as coaches look at different areas of the game e.g. the Forward coach actually reports back as an Attack Coach and say what our HT team talk would be. This week\u2019s task was to rip up our schedule and redesign it. Stretching the thinking.<\/li>\n<li>Collective leadership of the organisation important. What are the priorities? What will make a difference to the organisation when this is finished? How can we get prepared for what is going to happen? Making sure we\u2019re learning.<\/li>\n<li>We have an office of staff where we become reliant on certain members of staff. So the process I\u2019ve thought about is capturing the knowledge of people, so we don\u2019t lose it when people leave. How do programmes capture knowledge?<\/li>\n<li>There should be a playbook for every organisation. Not a paper folder anymore, but putting it into a system. But how do you collect all that information into a central point? How do you group and theme it? Sharepoint is a popular tool. There is so much out there, so what makes sense and what doesn\u2019t. Facebook Workplace, Slack (for channels) are other options.<\/li>\n<li>Educating out athletes on how independent and autonomous they can be to look after their own programme. From an S&amp;C perspective, giving them the opportunity to manipulate their programme has been great.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. Additional Supporting Material<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33487\" src=\"https:\/\/www.leadersinsport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Untitled-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"312\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Physical Health:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-If we\u2019re ill we\u2019re less able to deal with setbacks. It can feel too much.<br \/>\n-Sleep &#8211; very few people can perform at their optimum on less than seven hours\u2019 sleep. Lots of people think we can and we\u2019re wrong!<br \/>\n-If we\u2019re fit we are much better equipped to deal with what comes our way.<br \/>\n-\u2018You are what you eat\u2019 \u2013 a healthy diet is am important factor<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relationships &amp; Interactions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-As humans we\u2019re tribal. One of the worst punishments in centuries past was to be cast out from the tribe or village<br \/>\n-Friendships and love play their part<br \/>\n-From a work perspective \u2013 having a good trusting relationship with our colleagues and particularly our managers can make a big difference.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mental &amp; Emotional Health:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Belief in ourselves vs doubting ourselves<br \/>\n-Outcome focus vs problem focus<br \/>\n-Being mindful \u2013 the ability to focus on one thing at a time vs being distracted and our minds racing from one tasks or thought to another<br \/>\n-Choosing our response vs reacting emotionally<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spiritual (Meaning):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-What\u2019s important to me? Is that reflected in what I do?<br \/>\n-Do I live my values?
