How can you develop better relationships during this uncertain period?<\/li>\n<li>How are you going to hit the ground running when the seasons restart? What foundations can be put in place now to support this?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>1. Group Challenges: Impacts of the Current Climate<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Impacts and effects of the short-term on the long-term. How to get through next 18 months?<\/li>\n<li>Dealing with the uncertainty of no end date of the pandemic.<\/li>\n<li>Remote working for a long period of time.<\/li>\n<li>Challenge and realisation of how dependent high performance teams are on time structures.<\/li>\n<li>How do we support players and coaches \u2013 what do we anticipate will happen and how can we scenario plan for this?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Challenges of remote working for such a long period of time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The ability to be able to communicate properly has been a huge learning curve \u2013 not just as a hierarchical communication network but across everybody.<\/li>\n<li>Time management and structuring of a day is important. Consider these four pillars to support the structuring and productivity:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>1. <strong>Physical Environment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tip = Focus more on video calls to have a physical and visual connection rather than an audio \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 call to be able to monitor attentiveness and engagement in the calls.<\/p>\n<p>2.<strong> Communication<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tip = Establish clear working guidelines and agree to stick to these guidelines; give work \/ feedback in a timely manner \u2013 respect the rest of the group.<\/p>\n<p>3.<strong> Working Routines<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tip = Each individual department work out each set guidelines. People have different \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 environments and challenges within them. Find a way for you to work at your best \u2013 keep adapting and involving yourself in debates and discussions. Dress for work!<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Wellbeing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tip = Exercise as much as you can to stimulate body and mind.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The lack of hierarchical structure is creating the best moments. Try creating smaller networks that interact. Teams use a process called a \u2018Head Count\u2019 to keep an eye on people\u2019s mental health and wellbeing, but when we are away from each other, you aren\u2019t having those physical interactions daily.<\/li>\n<li>Consider small multi-disciplinary network groups \u2013 also can have a positive impact on team meetings as there is less possibility of people missing out on key messages from different departments.<\/li>\n<li>In the Olympic movement with recent news, the challenge is to keep people motivated, so the athletes have firstly been given a break \u2013 they also have psychological and mental wellbeing support as it can be difficult to come to terms with the cancellation of the Games.<\/li>\n<li>An interesting observation in this period is how athletes and staff have responded to challenge: not having the ability to do specific sport-based training, set fun challenges for the athletes each week that they have to commit to. Also has a positive impact on engagement with others.<\/li>\n<li>As a Performance Director, I start the week off with a video message to the staff which is both personal (what I\u2019ve done at the weekend) but also the focuses for the week ahead. It\u2019s also powerful to challenge staff to connect with each other and then come back and share what they\u2019ve been talking about.<\/li>\n<li>Important to find the balance of having some fun and sporting structure. One team has set up an app with a leader board which tallies up individuals points based on the performance challenges and habits they should be doing (mindfulness, breathing exercises etc) \u2013 humour creates energy.<\/li>\n<li>In your conversations with both staff and athletes, look at identifying the positive actions and keeping an eye on potential struggles and challenges that are being faced \u2013 this is relevant to both their wellbeing and elements of their game.<\/li>\n<li>Try to not have the same conversations and focus on how you can get a little bit more out of the individuals each time you speak.<\/li>\n<li>Emotional intelligence is vital in this period &#8211; check the sense in the voices ad energy of your players and staff. When acting upon these observations, it\u2019s important to ensure it remains personalised and tailored to each individual.<\/li>\n<li>During this process, it\u2019s been important to set structure to the day from the outset and this also includes structure in relation to technical development. Important to keep it disciplined and place a topic of discussion out there for people to explore, build and get opinion to build into the technical programme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Returning to play.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When considering return to play from a staff perspective, consider adopting a two weeks on, one week off approach.<\/li>\n<li>Consider three areas of focus when thinking about this process:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>1. <strong>Tactical Development<\/strong> \u2013 where is the game, where has it been and where can we take the game?<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0<strong>Professional Development for Each Coach<\/strong> \u2013 how can you improve your communication skills?<\/p>\n<p>3.<strong> Relationship Development<\/strong> \u2013 how can you develop relationships with your players in this situation?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first step back to full cohesion is tuning the staff to become masters of a lot of things, as this process has to begin whilst we are still in isolation.<\/li>\n<li>The main focuses will be on team and tactic specific skills, but important to not expose the players to risk physically.<\/li>\n<li>How agile can we be? With financial pressures on clubs, the turn around time for teams to get back to play can be slim, so we have to be ready. We need to be more agile in our thinking rather than just scenario planning.<\/li>\n<li>If you give players background information as early as possible, they are prepared to do a lot. By explaining it early and the reason behind that it actually becomes quite smooth.<\/li>\n<li>The process of disseminating information is very important \u2013 run a Q&amp;A with players and staff to update everyone on potential structural changes and processes that will influence these. This can offer some assurance and a level of certainty.<\/li>\n<li>When thinking about returning to play, don\u2019t discount training history and how quickly people can get back to what their \u2018normal\u2019 is.<\/li>\n<li>We will have to be Inventive and creative in the periodisaiton process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. What have been some of the positives through these difficult circumstances? <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Communication skills as staff, but also the dynamic between players and staff.<\/li>\n<li>Reflecting on where we are professionally, both individually and collectively. Act on this to improve our your \/ the team\u2019s performance.<\/li>\n<li>Learning a lot about the players and staff through this adversity. Who have been the agile, adaptable, resilient or self-reliant ones? Looking ahead, how we can use this insight positively?<\/li>\n<li>Learning how to be empathetic.<\/li>\n<li>Refocused daily planning and having to be even more detail to be successful.<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining relationships. Getting to know staff and players as people and not just on a sporting level.<\/li>\n<li>Clear focus on what we want to learn \u2013 self-improvement.<\/li>\n<li>Distributed leadership and the speed that problems have had to be solved both as a player and staff group.
