Group Challenges: Current &amp; Future Impacts of COVID-19<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Where things could lead to and what they could look like in a few months?<\/li>\n<li>How are we thinking about routines when it\u2019s difficult to have the same ones as usual?<\/li>\n<li>What are effective communication methods in isolation?<\/li>\n<li>How are we and other practitioners currently managing ourselves?<\/li>\n<li>Crisis Management \u2013 how do we be better when we come out of this pandemic? How do we ensure we are fit for purpose?<\/li>\n<li>How do we provide reassurance when there is no clarity in the situation?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Challenges and effective methods of communication<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s very difficult to offer reassurance during this period. Ask yourselves and your staff the question, what can we do to at least support this?<\/li>\n<li>Short, sharp, relevant information can offer reassurance.<\/li>\n<li>The unknown is becoming greater, so we are employing a process of over-communicating. Although this can be a way to reassure, we do have to consider overloading athletes and staff with information, it\u2019s vital to find the balance.<\/li>\n<li>The parameters are constantly shifting, without any knowledge of the end date. It is about constant updates but it\u2019s important that this is also easily accessible for players and staff.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain the human relationship as well as the sporting relationship. Too much information to the sporting relationship can be overwhelming, so it\u2019s important to find the right balance.<\/li>\n<li>Some athletes aren\u2019t great trainers; they just enjoy training within an environment with others. We need to give both staff and athletes an element of freedom and remember they are all different as individuals.<\/li>\n<li>Have a human connection of \u2018that we are here for you\u2019 and not trying to promise or solve anything. Communicate in a way that highlights purpose to each individual.<\/li>\n<li>A lot of people are out of their comfort zone, so it\u2019s important to show some humility.<\/li>\n<li>Have some flexibility in your approach. We all want to continue to have the athletes in particular training and working on certain elements of their game, but we need to be sensitive to not have them trapped when they haven\u2019t given you the buy-in to that approach.<\/li>\n<li>Think about how we listen before we prescribe how we allocate their time, schedules or timetables.<\/li>\n<li>Some performance staff have asked for videos or photos of the training space allowing the athletes to be active in giving feedback so the staff can prescribe a solution from there. You get their buy-in to prescribe.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Keep the main thing, the main thing\u2019. Be mindful of all of the noise that is going on around everyone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Routine<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Allow your staff and athletes to develop their own routine. Everyone has different spaces and environments, so being encouraged or advised what to do lacks sensitivity.<\/li>\n<li>We are treating it as off-season, so athletes are still being given individual development plans. The reason for this is to try and keep as much a sense of routine as possible.<\/li>\n<li>In Australia, a lot of the Olympic athletes have been given two weeks off immediately after the postponement of the Olympics, which has received great feedback. The phrase that has been used is \u2018this is the new normal\u2019, so give athletes and staff the time to reset their routines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. What Next?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Decision-making processes in high performing organisations are built on certain pillars, but these have been taken away from beneath us. It\u2019s made a lot of leaders ask themselves the question as to whether our organisations are built for purpose?<\/li>\n<li>Many rarely plan for survival mode, it\u2019s mainly a reactive process.<\/li>\n<li>What is it that we aren\u2019t doing now, that would support us in the future? Even though this climate is incredibly challenging, is there things that can make you fit for purpose or even more competitive in the future?<\/li>\n<li>This uncertainty gives us all opportunity for further education and development of ourselves.
