How are others tackling individual needs analysis of coaches that they are working with or developing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The more individualised and bespoke the work you can do with your coaches the more impact you will get, however practically it is time consuming.<\/li>\n<li>Focus on quick wins early to set a positive tone towards the needs of that individual. It is harder to initially focus on the longer-term development to get buy-in from that individual, so try to generate and showcase impact early to foster trust.<\/li>\n<li>Who do similar things to you outside of sport? When considering the business world where there have been some successes with business \/ life coach-based roles, is there an opportunity for us in sport to integrate something similar?<\/li>\n<li>Coach development is about interactivity and not necessarily a system or a process, so it can be hard to model this into a coach competency framework \u2013 it can be portrayed as being negative to high performance coaches.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s the individual\u2019s ability to form a relationship to pull the information out of the coach that you, as a developer, need to take forward and then, tactically, direct them towards some areas where they may be some blind spots.<\/li>\n<li>Designing and implementing frameworks to identify and measure individual needs analysis can be considered redundant considering the dynamic nature of what coaching actually is.<\/li>\n<li>The influence of context when working with coaches is crucial \u2013 everyone and environments differ.<\/li>\n<li>How do we assess coaches by the response of the players?<\/li>\n<li>A lot of needs analysis are philosophy-led in what we are trying to achieve. It\u2019s always powerful to encourage coaches to reflect on their own coaching, but also consider having others observe and reflect on their practice from different field of excellence. Build a more holistic picture for the coach.<\/li>\n<li>Increase time and effort in encouraging the coach to take ownership of their work. Coach developers would naturally lead this process, however by having the coach developer play a more subjective, \u2018critical friend\u2019 role, can lead to better quality feedback and conversation.<\/li>\n<li>Should we consider the art of experience more? By taking people outside of their natural environment, would that unearth areas and blind spots to develop more easily?<\/li>\n<li>To make this a success, it\u2019s important to set each coach with one thing specifically to look at. There is also the possibility of the coach leaning towards confirmation bias of their own coaching practice. They will tend to report back on things they have seen that they do already to reinforce current behaviours rather than challenge themselves.<\/li>\n<li>Performance vs potential with coaches. How do we assess coaches with really high potential?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. How can we better identify high potential coaches in our recruitment process?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider incorporating members of the interdisciplinary team and even in some cases the players into the process.<\/li>\n<li>Having someone else leading the hiring process can be powerful to keep the Head of Coach Development at a distance from the recruitment process. The reason for this It can compromise relationships pretty quickly the work that you can do.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Get the best people on the bus\u2019 which aligns to a values-based recruitment process. The lead on from this is getting to understand what a good person looks like and how they will operate in your environment.<\/li>\n<li>Coaches who are you considering to recruit who still have the mindset of \u2018the player box\u2019, by wanting to still be in the dugout will not make good developers. You need to identify those who have a passion for developing others.<\/li>\n<li>In recruitment, look for affability, ability and availability \u2013 this is a combination of values-based, plus competencies, plus practicality all in one.<\/li>\n<li>We have to better consider coaching partnerships and how we create coaching teams based on skillsets and personality.<\/li>\n<li>Consider broader education of coaching teams to try and get some shared consciousness with key people within your teams to make their operational, day-to-day lives far more effective.<\/li>\n<li>We often develop individuals in isolation but that necessarily doesn\u2019t translate into effective team performance as we haven\u2019t spent time working on how to develop them together. It begs the question of how you approach recruitment and whether they have the requisite skillset to be successful as an individual or operate successfully in a team.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>What does the modern coach need to know?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We tackle this question in our latest Performance Special Report.
