Listening: Leaders Performance Institute<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/performance-special-report-march-2020\/\">Coachmaker: Leaders Performance Institute Special Report<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/leaders-performance-podcast-andy-friend\/\">Leaders Performance Podcast: Andy Friend<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Future Thinking \/ Performance Questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the most effective means of engagement and engendering positive change in coach development amongst the most influential people on the pathway without imposing a system?<\/li>\n<li>As cross-discipline knowledge grows in importance, to what extent are we moving towards coaches being more multidisciplinary in the future?<\/li>\n<li>How are you working to identify relevant developmental needs in coaches?<\/li>\n<li>How do you make sure that coach development and coaching provisions \u2018look\u2019 like the game? Some sports are fluid in nature so there needs to be a balance between emphasising technical proficiency and realistic environments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>1. How are you trying to achieve those levels of engagement on your coach development pathways? How do you turn this challenge into an opportunity?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Each aspiring coach comes from a different context, not just in terms of\u00a0whether or not\u00a0they\u2019re a pathway coach or a participation coach. Governing bodies should\u00a0note:\u00a0global scaling is problematic.<\/li>\n<li>The focus should be on how they coach rather than what they coach, as that enables us to make contextually appropriate changes.<\/li>\n<li>What is a coach within your pathway? What are the key characteristics? There will not be a single alignment but there can be a gold thread to what you\u2019re doing. A central resource enables you to better support coaches.<\/li>\n<li>While there should be always be some distinction, your coach development framework will be influenced by your player development pathways and competition structure. Don\u2019t\u00a0forget:\u00a0there will be commonalities.<\/li>\n<li>Consider the link between your desired style of play, what you need players to do, and equip your coaches accordingly.<\/li>\n<li>Perhaps you can work towards a personality reference point?<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re using a traffic light system it\u2019s probably not meeting the needs of all your coaches; there needs to be range, with objective measures but also conversational, subjective measures.<\/li>\n<li>There are ways to entice and engage each coach and we want them to be passionate about developing themselves\u00a0on a daily basis.<\/li>\n<li>Think of online methods such as newsletters with links to your playing approach, philosophy, as well as virtual discussions [live interactive platforms].<\/li>\n<li>Experiment with \u2018nudge\u2019 cards around your facility\u00a0as a way to\u00a0build momentum and provide opportunities for people to engage in information and discussions. These nudge cards can include open-ended questions or leave a blank for the coach to fill in themselves. Some may even have a QR code that leads to a relevant article. This can generate a discussion with an individual in the relevant department; or lead them to some relevant articles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Identifying the coach\u2019s need in their ongoing development<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Self-reflection is a crucial component for coaches. A 360-degree process is helpful for raising coach self-awareness and helps to put things in place to meet coach needs on an individual and regional basis.<\/li>\n<li>Build coach development into your performance management system; create a safe environment for that self-reflection. Establish trust and introduce your people to each other.<\/li>\n<li>Observe a conversation between a coach and an athlete or colleague. Then ask the coach to consider who controlled the conversation? Who was the decision-maker and how did that make them feel? It\u00a0opens up\u00a0the deeper conversation about both their coaching capabilities and elasticity.<\/li>\n<li>Investing in cultural architects as your coach developers, those who can see coaches more than we can see them; people who can do the work when you\u2019re not there.<\/li>\n<li>Coaches should be encouraged to take an increasingly proactive interest not only in their athletes but other coaches too. There can be too much focus on their personal admin but proactive coaches exhibit a genuine desire to support. It may not be measurable but you can see intent.<\/li>\n<li>That means you need to provide spaces for coaches to engage with each other, whether that be your under-9s coaches talking to your under-23s.<\/li>\n<li>Equally important: when you facilitate that you also want to encourage such interactions to continue post-event.<\/li>\n<li>It helps if you can develop a It helps to develop a strong, community feel. Work to spend time understanding what coaches need &#8211; try to support without being a \u2018top-down\u2019 system.<\/li>\n<li>If you bring in consultants they must work\u00a0<em>for <\/em>the coaches, not your internal people.<\/li>\n<li>Day to day conversational feedback is a useful tool for helping to better understand how you can support coaches.<\/li>\n<li>A layered coaching and coach development framework (with individual development plans) allows you to place the core elements of your playing philosophy at different stages of the pathways.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. The future coach\/focus &#8211; what will they need?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coaching needs must be guided by the needs of the players and the sport; we must look at all facets of performance and flexibility will be key<\/li>\n<li>Getting recruitment right is paramount if you\u2019re taking a holistic approach &#8211; getting the right person, who is curious, perceptive, open.<\/li>\n<li>We can\u2019t predict the\u00a0future\u00a0so it helps to make people curious and give them the capacity to reflect in their ongoing development.<\/li>\n<li>The future coach will need to be proficient in four key areas:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>1. Strategy: <\/strong>aligning people and the team with the\u00a0gameplan;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Setting standards: <\/strong>the quality of the execution for the team or the sport;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Driving capability: <\/strong>be that knowledge, skills or experience;<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Fostering the culture: <\/strong>fostering a sense of ownership in the athlete or team.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Remove any ideas of shortcuts for the coach. They are mentors but they must also commit to growing themselves if they are\u00a0have\u00a0integrity. You need to know yourself to be a coach; as a coach, consider yourself, your people, and the impact on your culture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>What does the modern coach need to know?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We tackle this question in our latest Performance Special Report.
