How do you build genuine empathy?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have that \u2018roundtable\u2019 feel within your environment when even new people come into the building \u2013 does everyone have a voice at the table?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Challenges &amp; Areas of Interest<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How do we perceive high performance cultures?<\/li>\n<li>When growing a team and hiring new staff, how do we integrate them into an existing culture?<\/li>\n<li>How do you maintain a culture?<\/li>\n<li>How to work with part-time and casual staff on ingraining the culture in a similar way to those who are full-time?<\/li>\n<li>What are the keys to evolving and developing a culture once implemented?<\/li>\n<li>When are you developing your culture is it led from the top down or bottom up?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. <\/strong><strong>How Do We Perceive a High Performance Culture?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Low connection, high fear and a lack of enjoyment can really hurt your culture.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018How do I help and embrace you beyond just winning and losing?\u2019<\/li>\n<li>There is a shift from older school management approaches which were reinforced around telling people what to do, to now looking more at autonomy and mastery approaches.<\/li>\n<li>We tend to see people thrive and flourish more, especially with younger generations when they are given more accountability. Consider the balance between autonomy and structure.<\/li>\n<li>You still need a leader at the top to steer the direction and generate buy-in.<\/li>\n<li>Your environment needs to feel secure and to also foster the idea of getting input from everyone.<\/li>\n<li>A good culture incorporates the sharing of constructive feedback and guidance. For this to be effective, the \u2018safeness\u2019 of the environment is very important.<\/li>\n<li>Who are you showing up as every single day? Is there full clarity in the expectations of this?<\/li>\n<li>We hear it a lot, but culture can\u2019t be words on a wall \u2013 it has to be something brought to life every single day.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018The standards you walk past are the stands you allow\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>A great culture is like a great family.<\/li>\n<li>When you consider constructive feedback in a family, it comes from a place of love or care \u2013 what can we learn from that in our environments?<\/li>\n<li>Having that element of care before driving standards can be a very good medium to consider.<\/li>\n<li>From an athlete\u2019s perspective, a good culture allows them to have a sense of independence and flexibility whilst still being in line with the overarching behaviours you have set.<\/li>\n<li>If you work in a large organisation with a pathway, it\u2019s crucial to have consistency across your pathway regarding culture. It makes it an easier transition moving through, as well as clarity amongst everyone on the core standards and behaviours expected.<\/li>\n<li>A high performance culture includes constant evolution and education for both staff and players.<\/li>\n<li>Emphasise the positives and successes more than highlighting the weaknesses. Show appreciation when someone has upheld the standards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. How are you thinking about integrating new staff into a new or existing culture? <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider Simon Sinek\u2019s \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Jeg3lIK8lro\">Golden Circle<\/a>\u2019. Start with the why: \u2018why are you here?\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Ask the question: What is the big picture or vision that you want to deliver on in terms of your role within the organisation? Then ask the \u2018how\u2019 \u2013 how will you do it and what will it entail?<\/li>\n<li>Psychological safety within the existing environment is so important for the integration of new people into the culture \u2013 how do you allow people to be authentic without them having the fear of what others think of them? How do you build genuine empathy?<\/li>\n<li>High performance is all about trust \u2013 if you have trust you will do things again and again. If this is underpinned by empathy, you don\u2019t want to break that trust.<\/li>\n<li>Do you have that \u2018roundtable\u2019 feel within your environment when even new people come into the building \u2013 does everyone have a voice at the table?<\/li>\n<li>Successful cultures and environments have complete clarity, and that is whether you are new to that culture or an existing presence.<\/li>\n<li>Do you have \u2018culture consultants\u2019? Who are the people or athletes that can uphold the standards and also be educators to those coming in to the environment?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have core expectations when it comes to delivery? Provides clarity for new personnel coming in.<\/li>\n<li>With new people coming in it\u2019s important to lay out the plans for future proofing the culture. However, it\u2019s important to consider those who are already in the existing culture as the majority of people who are comfortable, do not champion culture change \u2013 it\u2019s important to educate these guys as well on the status of the culture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. When you have implemented a new culture, how do you develop it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bring people into a paddock with high fences. In the paddock you give them the autonomy to play to their strengths, make decisions and be empowered, but there are some certain parameters they can\u2019t cross from a values-based approach.<\/li>\n<li>Including stakeholders in the process as early as possible will allow you to generate that buy-in and help with taking the ownership in evolving it further.<\/li>\n<li>Consider the three F\u2019s: failure, fix and forget.
