Some players can maintain grace under pressure and bounce back quickly from setbacks, while others choke under pressure and dwell on past mistakes. <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some athletes thrive in pressure-cooker situations and perform better when the weight of the world is on their shoulders. In contrast, other players experience crippling anxiety and fumble when the stakes are high.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/optios.com\/about-us\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tom Nugent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Director of Elite Performance Solutions at The Platypus Institute, says, \u201cAs a coach, you want to understand how your players react to stress throughout the season. The seasonal grind, the added intensity of the playoffs, or even the additional weight of a few road games in a row.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve seen it in every sport, whether it\u2019s smashing a tennis racket, getting a technical, retaliating at an opponent, or even just becoming detached from the game for a few minutes to a quarter, players react differently to different things,\u201d adds Nugent. \u201cBecoming more resilient against a trash-talking opponent, a ref making a call you don\u2019t agree with, or a play not going your way is part of what separates the best from the great.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Platypus Institute has the capability to leverage a wealth of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/headstart-why-athletes-and-coaches-are-turning-toward-neuroscience\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scientific data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and research findings relating to stress, resilience, and performance under pressure that can help coaches and players alike. \u201cThe ability to recognize how both your body and mind can change in response to stressful outside influences, and the ability to control your reactions through capabilities such as neurofeedback, can provide a distinct advantage by creating a mental shield to help keep you in the game, in the moment, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/neuroscience-optimize-elite-performance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">performing at your best<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says Nugent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The neurobiology and psychometrics of resilience<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers at King\u2019s College London (KCL) recently conducted a meta-analysis, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/08964289.2016.1170661\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adapting to Stress: Understanding the Neurobiology of Resilience<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that explored how different individuals respond to stress on a neurobiological level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This analysis by Carlos Os\u00f3rio and colleagues identifies specific neural circuits and other brain mechanisms associated with being more &#8216;stress-resilient&#8217;. Although this paper identifies the neurobiological components associated with a \u201cstress-resilient profile,\u201d more rigorous neuroscientific research is needed. From a psychological perspective, the authors of this review offer some insights regarding character traits, explanatory styles, and lifestyle choices that appear to boost resilience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt should be noted that active coping strategies, humor, hardiness, and extroversion can promote resilience through fostering feelings of mastery, commitment, and competence as well as the ability to help others through bonding,\u201d Os\u00f3rio and his co-authors said. \u201cImportantly, the propensity of resilient individuals to express positive emotions, in relation to negative events, enables them to control their anxiety and fears.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These insights on stress-resilient individuals by researchers at KCL dovetail with the work of Peter Clough at the University of Huddersfield, who famously identified and created the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/313119986_Mental_toughness_The_concept_and_its_measurement\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4C\u2019s Model<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d of mental toughness (MT). In 2019, Neil Dagnall and his applied cognitive psychology colleagues at Manchester Metropolitan University created a mental toughness survey called the MTQ-10, which rates degrees of resilience based on the four C\u2019s of challenge, commitment, control, and confidence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe view mental toughness as a general construct and use the 4C framework for reflection and development,\u201d Dagnall said in a recent <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychology Today<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interview. \u201cAt the heart of this is an emphasis on positivity (i.e., viewing barriers as hurdles, obstacles as challenges, etc.). The focus is on empowering individuals to adopt an internal locus of control, facilitating a sense of self-belief, and focusing on their self-efficacy. Obviously, this can vary across people. Hence, the 4C framework is useful for examining strengths and potential weaknesses (areas of development).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Items on the MTQ-10<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Even when under considerable pressure, I usually remain calm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. I tend to worry about things well before they actually happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. I usually find it hard to summon enthusiasm for the tasks I have to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. I generally cope well with any problems that occur.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. I generally feel that I am a worthwhile person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. \u201cI just don\u2019t know where to begin\u201d is a feeling I usually have when presented with several things to do at once.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. When I make mistakes, I usually let it worry me for days after.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. I generally feel in control.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. I am generally able to react quickly when something unexpected happens.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. I generally look on the bright side of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of the MTQ questionnaires use a five-point <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Likert-Scale\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likert scale<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which creates a mental toughness\/resilience score based on responses ranging from \u201cstrongly agree\u201d to \u201cstrongly disagree.\u201d How would you respond to the questions on the MTQ-10?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much like the discovery of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/headstart-neuroscience-gamechanger-elite-sport\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">human brain&#8217;s plasticity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he authors speculate that mental toughness is a &#8216;plastic&#8217; and malleable personality trait that is never set in stone. Dagnall explains, \u201cMental toughness is \u2018trainable\u2019 to the extent that people can learn to adopt non-preferential behaviors. In this context, the short MTQ-10 measures provide expedient, accessible, and easy to interpret indexes for assessing levels of [resilience] in everyday situations (i.e., sport, educational, and occupational).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, the brevity of this 10-item questionnaire makes it easy to readily assess and test levels of resilience and mental toughness at various points in time and in many different environments both on and off the playing field.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Resilience is key to thriving in elite sports<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress triggers psychophysiological reactions in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) that affect the body, brain, and mind. Colloquially, we refer to this as the &#8216;fight-flight-or-freeze&#8217; response.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unbridled, runaway stress responses increase sports-related handicaps and can derail an athlete\u2019s career. However, learning to reframe <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">distress<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (bad stress) as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eustress<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (good stress) has been shown to calm the nervous system and makes the \u201crelaxation response\u201d more robust.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStress can have both positive and negative effects on performance, and knowing the variance of an individual player\u2019s response to these things will give better insight into how to maximize their potential while maintaining optimal mental health,\u201d Tom Nugent said in a recent Q&amp;A about resilience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, Candace Hogue and colleagues at Penn State University published a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1469029219300494?via%3Dihub\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychology of Sport and Exercise<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the protective impact of mental skills training sessions and motivational priming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hogue et al. were able to establish that mental skills training sessions that taught athletes to adopt a &#8216;<\/span><b>stress-is-enhancing<\/b>&#8216; <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mindset improved psychophysiological responses to performance anxiety. These changes were indexed by lower <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0306453008002990\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">salivary cortisol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a stress hormone) in response to a sports-related performance stressor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another paper, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/10413200.2017.1354339#f0002\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Qualitative Exploration of Thriving in Elite Sport<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Applied Sport Psychology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> identified eight characteristics associated with \u201cthriving\u201d among elite sports performers. For this analysis, Daniel Brown and colleagues at the University of Bath defined <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thriving <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as encompassing \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sustained high-level performance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">optimistic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outlook.\u201d Each of the eight characteristics identified by Brown et al. were dependent on an athlete\u2019s fundamental \u201cability to control and manage stressful situations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elite athlete performers quoted in this analysis share personal details that illustrate how possessing the right mental attitude reduces distress, increases resilience, and facilitates thriving.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One elite sport performer said, \u201cI don\u2019t think any athlete exists in the world [who doesn\u2019t feel] some level of pressure on them. I do think at some level an athlete needs stress to thrive.\u201d A teammate added, \u201cYou need the mental wherewithal to be able to handle [the pressure of] elite level performance sport, because without it I think it would be a long battle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many athletes fall into a trap of thinking that coping with stressful situations is beyond their locus of control.
