How do we develop an individual within the context of a high performing team?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sport has evolved a lot where there is a lot more focus on individualisation. It\u2019s becoming more important to educate future coaches on how to find the balance between the person and the wider team.<\/li>\n<li>When this is done well, you can always tell the difference within the environment.<\/li>\n<li>It is very challenging for a coach to have the skillset to do this in the concept of a team, but the question to other coach developers would be \u2018how can we develop these skills\u2019?<\/li>\n<li>High performing teams can 100% be our competitive advantage over other facets of performance but again it\u2019s creating an environment that cater for individual and team needs.<\/li>\n<li>Becoming a trend of more individual and one-to-one sessions with athletes outside of the main training programme. Looking at how coaches in individual sports work and look to integrate some of those principles into a team environment.<\/li>\n<li>In football there is an acceptance that not everyone will make it forward to the first team so with that in mind, there is naturally a more individualised approach. There is definitely a challenge around becoming too individualised that they cannot slot into a team environment. We need to work on the transition piece.<\/li>\n<li>Coach development needs to span the full pathway in order to influence this.<\/li>\n<li>There is no non-negotiable when it comes to the skillset that the coach will need to influence this as everyone is different and \u2018it depends\u2019 on the character of the other coaches or athlete and the makeup of the environment. But one thing that definitely be considered is relationship management.<\/li>\n<li>Ask yourself the question, what is the difference between individual and team coaching skills?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Evidence-based approaches vs. intuition in coach development.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The coaching space is becoming more evidence-based.<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s nothing as practical as good theory. It\u2019s something we need to back up and educate other stakeholders on.<\/li>\n<li>Consider a social learning theory approach in your development models to validate the value that has been created.<\/li>\n<li>Consider the question of what is pragmatism in performance coaching?<\/li>\n<li>Why do we do what we do in the way that we do it?<\/li>\n<li>Align your coach development thinking around the professional standards for coaching (do you have a professional standard for coaching framework within your organisation?)<\/li>\n<li>Not everything will be theoretically supported, but will still offer value to your framework. What is being evidence-based?<\/li>\n<li>Coach development is becoming more prevalent and this question of evidence-based vs. intuition is going to be asked more and more.<\/li>\n<li>Relish being intuitive and proactive in your work, with the backing of some evidence and theory. Your intuition is such an important element of how you deliver, but if it can be backed by theory and evidence, it\u2019s even better.<\/li>\n<li>An observation as coaches is to ensure that the athletes are prepared mentally before moving into the technical and tactical. Get the mood right first- this is an intuitive approach.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Alignment vs. autonomy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We want to encourage autonomy and allow the coaches to lead, but equally we want there to be a level of alignment that allows the teams and athletes to experience the common threads of an overarching philosophy.<\/li>\n<li>In a lot of environments, coaches approach their work completely differently which can create a chaotic pathway.<\/li>\n<li>Creating a common coaching language is also important within the environment to continue momentum and keep consistency, especially in coach and athlete development frameworks.<\/li>\n<li>The coach needs to know why they are doing something and how that relates to the bigger picture. That justification is important.<\/li>\n<li>You will not always have stability, so this will naturally bring in an element of challenge and evolution of the philosophy. There\u2019s nothing wrong with this, but what is important is having alignment of the core fundamentals of the philosophy.
