Alongside Torres was the Toronto Blue Jays&#8217; Vice President of Performance Angus Mugford.<\/p>\n<p>The duo discussed: the importance of understanding and evaluating context, building and maximising trust with athletes and performance staff, the importance of relationships, setting up an organisation and high performance department for collaboration rather than collision, and how to make the most out of learning.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Takeaways<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The importance of building relationships while navigating a wealth of egos and aspirations. The key has been been working to understand people and learning to support them while also laying the groundwork for the cultural and structural development she was hired to establish. At the outset she asked for time and support from the Philadelphia front office and says that teams should consider bringing in the people they believe can ring in the gradual, necessary changes rather than hiring on talent alone. It needs to be a long-term vision that drives the team. What are the organisation\u2019s values? Is it to hire caring people? Ambitious people? The more you can project, the better the hiring process.<\/li>\n<li>Applied sports science is a fairly new feature at most major sports teams across North America, where the sports organisation\/university sports science collaborations are not as common. Teams tend to bring in outsiders, such as Torres, from either Europe or Australia. It is a topic Torres has written about with her friend and fellow sports scientist Yann Le Meur in their essay: <a href=\"https:\/\/sportperfsci.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/SPSR62_LeMeur_190328_final.pdf\">10 Challenges Facing Today\u2019s Applied Sports Scientist<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Set an organisation up for collaboration rather than collisions. It is important to define staff roles and set expectations, then give people the freedom and autonomy to perform their roles and the ability to interpret their job. With that comes increased self-awareness and staff members will be better-placed to ask for suitable support or suggest ways in which they would like to see the culture develop.<\/li>\n<li>Vulnerability and humility are important. Yes, your strengths give you an anchor but you cannot go it alone; you need support from above, below and around you; particularly if you are not the only new \u2018stranger\u2019. Learning needs to be focused on a simple message: I know what I want to accomplish but I want to get there with you, not by stepping on your toes. Winning people over and changing perceptions is a gradual process.<\/li>\n<li>Try to ensure your continued learning and progression by talking to people with experience of leading teams; learn from the mistakes of others and call upon your network.
