This presents challenges for coaches, so to help us explore how the learner is evolving and how we can prepare our coaches for this, we turned to the world of education for inspiration on how Eton College specifically is looking to prepare their teachers for future students.<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Takeaways<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Who are Generation Z?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Noakes outlined the characteristics of Generation Z [those born between 1997-2010] and suggested, with reference to a series of studies, how these might be leveraged by coaches in sport. Generation Z are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Disillusioned about traditional institutions, the establishment, politicians and the mass media.<\/li>\n<li>Sceptical about business leaders, their motives and trustworthiness.<\/li>\n<li>Pessimistic about the economy, social progress, and the environment.<\/li>\n<li>Concerned about terrorism and personal safety.<\/li>\n<li>Uneasy about their careers and future prospects.<\/li>\n<li>At ease with fluidity and the idea that nothing is permanent.<\/li>\n<li>Value experiences such as travel and helping the community more than starting a family or a business.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How do Gen Zs learn?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>While Millennials use three screens on average, Gen Zs frequently use up to five. Most use a smartphone, TV, laptop, desktop and a tablet. On screen = 10 hours a day.<\/li>\n<li>Constant stimulation and access to the world\u2019s information at their fingertips has given them an eight-second attention span and has trained their brains to expect instant gratification.<\/li>\n<li>Sitting in a hall or a classroom listening to a lecture is not for Gen Z.<\/li>\n<li>Gen Z students want a chance to be part of the learning process, not a passive bystander.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>So what can coaches do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Allow Gen Zs to show their individuality \u2013 remember they are used to \u2018hyper-customisation\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Communicate with them face to face \u2013 they prefer this.<\/li>\n<li>Give them feedback individually and in person.<\/li>\n<li>Allow them to be independent and competitive.<\/li>\n<li>Show them how to collaborate when it\u2019s needed (they are less collaborative than Millennials and need to be taught how).<\/li>\n<li>Experiential learning: Gen Zs learn by doing.<\/li>\n<li>Blended learning: personalised learning which is individually driven.Assessing and modifying: involve them in the planning and iteration stages.<\/li>\n<li>Storytelling: they are interested in the individual stories of their peers.<\/li>\n<li>Focus on the future: give them interactions with those in years ahead, clear goals, and focus on career development strategies.<\/li>\n<li>Rewards: they are serious and respond to \u2018work hard and see the rewards\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1. S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">chools are increasingly recognising that the teaching of non-cognitive skills is of equal importance to teaching the narrow band of cognitive skills that have tended to focus on in recent decades<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2. Character matters and we want to be able to understand it in a way that is not just tacit but is conscious, so that we\u2019re aware of what we are doing and how<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">3. Foster a growth mindset. L<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">anguage really matters to the values you pass on. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Talk about the approach<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, recognis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> what has been positive about that but also encourag<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">reflection and how to do<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> something differently and better in the future<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">4. If you take <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">people<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> away from what\u2019s familiar you very quickly put them in situations where they don\u2019t quite know how to cope \u2013 and that\u2019s where the real learning happens.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">5.
