Recruit. Assess. Select. Train. \u201cIt\u2019s not about who\u2019s right, it\u2019s about what\u2019s right\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Development mindset: <\/strong>&#8220;Everyone makes mistakes. The important part is whether or not they can own those mistakes and show self-awareness to look critically at themselves.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>High standards: <\/strong>What are we seeking? Humble, credible, approachable, durable, sustainable, collegial, IQ &amp; EQ (having the ability to adapt your leadership style and be able to act accordingly), confident, selfless. A unicorn\u2026<\/li>\n<li><strong>Durability: <\/strong>We set scenarios to push the operator up until the point of complete failure to see how they deal with it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reaction time: <\/strong>Officers are given a leadership evaluation. How do they react when they have to deal with a dilemma, how do they analyze risk? Look for indications of desire. In the military context, it\u2019s the desire to serve.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Consider your recruitment and selection paradigm \u2013 how much do you utilize assessment from other teammates within the organization? As leaders we all have a blind spot or a narrow lens, so use those \u2018in the trenches\u2019 who see the behaviors you want to capture and measure.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Adversity introduces a man to himself\u2019. Adversity also has the opportunity to introduce you to your teammates. Build your team up to learn to operate in that environment, and then focus on training them to operate in that so it becomes the norm.<\/li>\n<li>Take your people out of their normal social contexts and put them into unfamiliar environments where we knew they would come up against unfamiliar challenges. Give them the tools which they can put into practice to overcome those challenges.<\/li>\n<li>Mentoring in the military is considered a hugely valuable tool.
