Robert Neller. Within the session we discovered why the organization ditched one the best offenses in history, the keys to effective change management and how to prevent complacency, innovate and sustain elite levels of performance.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Takeaways<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Challenge culture. Again, it\u2019s easier said than done. And that can\u2019t be understated in the military. It took an \u2018inside outsider\u2019, aka Gen. Robert Neller, to do so. But challenging accepted wisdoms can have incredibly positive effects.<\/li>\n<li>The norm is good, but challenging it is even better. That means breaking down mind-sets of comfort, but it also means it spreads a feeling of continuous improvement throughout an organization. This will help solve real problems.<\/li>\n<li>To improve in the future, you have to understand the past. It\u2019s not always as exciting to look backwards as a leader, but it\u2019s integral to have a firm understanding on where the team and organization has been to understand where it needs to get to.<\/li>\n<li>Tradition is a constant in most teams and sports. In line with the history point above, it\u2019s important to understand the traditions but even more important to put it in the context of performance \u2013 strive to be better.<\/li>\n<li>Disrupt, don\u2019t destruct. New ideas are great, but you need backups in case they don\u2019t work out. Don\u2019t rush new ideas, make sure they are measured in their implementation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To reinvent the US Marine Corps\u2019 renowned rifle squad tactical formations took an \u2018inside outsider\u2019 in the form of General Robert Neller. This most exotic of leadership breeds possess a contrarian streak that challenges accepted wisdoms in a careful but consistent fashion from within the system.<\/li>\n<li>Sustaining and spreading a continuous-improvement culture means fighting inertia and reluctance to change routines, even bad ones. One effective way to do that is by focusing on solving real problems inside your own organization.<\/li>\n<li>Little should be considered sacrosanct but studying history is a vital form of practice in warfare, where service personnel have few opportunities to experience combat zones. The disruptive leader must have a firm grasp of an organization\u2019s past.<\/li>\n<li>Being aware of tradition should not make you a slave to the past. Tradition remains important, but it should be brought into a performance context. The aim should always be striving for continuous improvement.<\/li>\n<li>A leader should be disruptive but not destructive. Fully examine new ideas and create backup solutions in the event that an idea fails to improve the US Marines.
