Innovation, we took the time to explore how the world of meteorology works with data. Themes within this session included:\u00a0Creating clear, actionable insight from large datasets, how to\u00a0 set up a clear data collation process, predictive modelling and how to prepare for AI.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Takeaways<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With data, it\u2019s important to start simple. Simplicity is key, as there is a lot of data out there and you will probably try and use it all. But there is no need to right away, don\u2019t over complicate it.<\/li>\n<li>Big data is the buzz phrase, but little data is where you can probably have the most impact and can be more powerful. Having a lot of large datasets makes things hard to measure.<\/li>\n<li>Make the complex simple. It\u2019s easier said than done, but smaller questions will uncover answers to the complex situation. Developing a certain and specific methodology will help aid this.<\/li>\n<li>Take the knowledge and how it affects your organization, and use that information to create strategies and execute tactics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>When thinking about data, start simple. We can get too caught up in the weeds, in that there is a lot of it so we automatically want to try and use it all. Keep it simple.<\/li>\n<li>Also start small, keep it easy to execute and ensure that there is a clear process to accompany this. Having too many and sizeable datasets makes it hard to measure against.<\/li>\n<li>We are talking more about the term \u2018big data\u2019, but the truth is that understanding the \u2018little data\u2019 is more powerful \u2014determine what that little data is, and this has the potential to help you make smarter and more impactful decisions.<\/li>\n<li>Take the breed of those smaller test and datasets and put in place a scalable infrastructure so you can roll out proven successes. Going in straight at the deep end and trying to collate and make sense of everything isn\u2019t efficient.<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes the really important questions are the hardest to discover. You have to look at a complex situation and break it down into smaller questions.
