In this session we sought ideas from one of the world\u2019s best and most successful performers in collating lessons in keeping calm under intense pressure, strategic thinking, trusting intuition and managing risk.<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Takeaways<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You have to have a deep fundamental understanding of the game, first and foremost. The basic learning part. The second is an understanding of people. Third thing is discipline. A discipline in making the right decision even when things aren\u2019t going well (which in poker is called \u2018tilt\u2019).<\/li>\n<li>What separates the good players with the best is self-awareness. A lack of confidence is the number one downfall of any good player.<\/li>\n<li>Exposure to different environments, such as online poker, is educating new talent on how to understand and utilise data.<\/li>\n<li>Poker is about continuous learning. What are others learning? How can I adapt?<\/li>\n<li>Seek influence and inspiration from new talent \u2013 challenge yourself and your curiosity to get better. (New Age Teaching).<\/li>\n<li>There are always going to be evolutions, it\u2019s about humbling yourself to be prepared to adapt and evolve your own game.<\/li>\n<li>Defeat is inevitable. Debrief and evaluate what you did and write down anything you didn\u2019t do well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What interventions are you using to help support the emotional control of your athletes? Emotions impact the decision-making process, so how can you be creative in preparing them for these crucial moments?<\/li>\n<li>Ask yourself the question, are your practice sessions adequately preparing your athletes for moments of high pressure? Skill is a behaviour where a lot of the detail is in your sub-conscious because you just do it. It\u2019s important to nurture this.<\/li>\n<li>When there is no distraction from the consequences of not achieving the outcome you can be totally focused on the process. Give people the tools to adhere to the process.<\/li>\n<li>It is important for athletes to understand why they suffered an emotional setback or perhaps didn\u2019t perform that action or skill to the best of their ability. This is why self-awareness is so important for the development of athletes.<\/li>\n<li>Remember that failure is feedback. If you lost a hand in poker, did you make the right decision? What could you have done better?
