We gleaned insights from one of the best in the business to explore the latest thinking in accelerated learning, decision making, neuroscience and their relationship with higher levels of cognitive performance.<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Takeaways<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We can train novices to adopt the expert brain state. On an expert team, you see a \u2018cleanliness of communication\u2019, even in a high stress situation. Expert brains also recover from errors faster.<\/li>\n<li>Novice teams are both out of sync, have a messier communication style, and they perseverate on things that they\u2019ve done wrong. Sometimes the person who is more quiet and reserved is actually seen as the more natural leader.<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re learning a new skill, this is enabled in the brain by neuroplasticity. Deliberate practice is the key to building that master level performance.<\/li>\n<li>Experts are those who have a good picture of what perfect looks like, and can give themselves feedback as well as ask for feedback on how to improve. We can\u2019t improve and get to the that mastery of performance without feedback.<\/li>\n<li>The brain can change. It can be re-wired. Thinking about athletes, the ideal is to work with them from a young age of course. However, if your athletes are already adults when you start to work with them, it doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t improve their cognitive functioning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What makes someone an expert in your sport? What are some of the fundamental capabilities of your top experts? What aspects of the brain are involved in this expertise? Which of those capabilities can you accelerate through training?<\/li>\n<li>Experts build a model in their minds of what \u201cperfect\u201d looks like. When they practice, they measure their performance against that model. How are your athletes doing this? Can you identify and adopt elements of the best \u201cmodels\u201d into your overall program?<\/li>\n<li>Other than a few true physiological limits, you cannot be \u201ctoo good\u201d at core brain skills. Have you thought about the cognitive components of your sport that haven\u2019t yet been a focal point? How can you easily build more tasks with cognitive benefit into your program?<\/li>\n<li>Military training focuses on preparing for a variety of contingencies, some of which are rare but critical. The idea is to put people through difficult conditions so that when they encounter them in the field they perform with ease. What kinds of techniques and technologies could help with this in your sport? Can you better prepare your athletes for emotional upsets and enhance stress resilience?<\/li>\n<li>Science has proven that high performance teams are literally on the same brain \u201cwavelength\u201d.\u00a0 This is called \u2018group synchrony\u2019.\u00a0This state can be induced, often done by synchronizing breath, body movements or chanting.
