More resource, financial power and specialist knowledge are making sport performance teams all-encompassing. But the challenge remains how to create a holistic, high-functioning, inter-disciplinary unit. With that in mind, we explored how to build a team like that from the ground up and how to approach challenges such as silos, communication and people management.<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Takeaways<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is high performance? Everyone in the room will have a different definition. It\u2019s all context specific, you have to understand your framework. We work around four pillars of what high performance means to us. 1.Athlete-centred, 2. Coach-led, 3. Facility-enabled, 4. Objectively-informed.<\/li>\n<li>When recruiting on character, I want to know the person is like \u2013 could I go for a beer with them? We don\u2019t use any psychometric testing. Get to know someone. What are their core values? What do they believe in? Evaluating character is a granular thing. How will this help shape other staff too? Trying to find it is hard, but there is nothing better than talking to people.<\/li>\n<li>At the Golden Knights, we\u2019re trying to integrate the culture that we have, with the services that we provide. Establish pillars of importance, via a four step process: 1. Doing the right things. 2. Do things right. 3. Deliver our services. 4. Dissect our performance. Continuous feedback and improvement loop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In every organization there is \u2018hardware\u2019 and \u2018software\u2019. The hardware is often what keeps you at the forefront of the sports-performance \u2018arms race. However, the mainframe of the hardware only functions with the right software &#8211; human perspectives that optimize the true capabilities of the hardware. Optimizing performance should focus on \u2018software\u2019 over \u2018hardware\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>A \u2018shared vision\u2019 is the link between an individual\u2019s identity and that of the team\/organization. Core values ultimately drive performance behaviors, and the ability to dream and engage with a dream or vision is motivation. Therefore we must always consider the optimal way to create a shared vision.<\/li>\n<li>High performance dogma is everywhere, and ultimately imitation is perceived as the highest form of flattery. But we must connect OUR pathway to OUR team. When your KPIs are simply a mirror of others\u2019 \u2018high performance system\u2019, your targets\/KPIs cease to be good measures anymore, and now you are stuck in the dogma of \u2018optimizing performance\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Expertise bias and virtue silos are common in interdisciplinary teams.
