autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\"><\/iframe>\n                                    <\/div>\n                            \n                            \n                                                            <div class=\"es-section__text content-area\">\n                                    <p><h4>In this session we took a detailed view of Red Bull Racing\u2019s victory at the Chinese Grand Prix earlier this year. In a sport determined by small margins, it was the team\u2019s \u2018risk and reward\u2019 strategy that ultimately led to victory. We explored insights on how to mitigate risk, make key decisions under pressure, predicting performance and conveying world class communication.<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key takeaways:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Red Bull Racing approach each weekend as a military exercise, with everyone absolutely aware of roles and information flow all-important. That came to the fore when Ricciardo\u2019s car suffered a turbo failure in final practice. With a two hour window to install a new engine before qualifying, all but two of the sub-team working on Max Verstappen\u2019s sister car were seconded to help fix \u2013 a pre-planned process that ultimately shaved an hour off the team\u2019s previous quickest engine change. Ricciardo made it out for qualifying, ending up 6th\u00a0on the grid and in contention for the race.<\/li>\n<li>By regulation, the team are allowed 67 people at the circuit to operate on the cars \u2013 part of a total travelling team, once marketing, sponsorship and communications personnel are factored in, of around 100. Horner, at the top of the hierarchy, has ultimate sign-off on any major strategic, safety or tactical decision.<\/li>\n<li>Practise performing under pressure: The key to Red Bull\u2019s victory in China was the double pitstop \u2013 where both the team\u2019s cars pitted in close succession on the same lap \u2013 as the safety car came out. It\u2019s a rare event, but one that the team nonetheless prepares for, both in terms of simulating possible race scenarios \u2013 \u201cmillions\u201d in Horner\u2019s estimation \u2013 in the operations room back at the team\u2019s Milton Keynes headquarters and regular, thorough drills with the pit crew to carry out the actual tyre change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Precision time-keeping is a pre-requisite in Formula One, with immoveable deadlines especially in the cut and thrust of a qualifying session made up of three timed sections. Following Red Bull Racing\u2019s example, how can you create the environments in which your team will thrive in solving problems under time pressure?<\/li>\n<li>Consider how you are evaluating risk, especially in highly pressurised situations \u2013 do you have the right processes and systems in place to make and communicate decisions with clarity?<\/li>\n<li>To what extent have you engineered agile decision-making in your organisation? Are there ways to be more flexible and take better decisions based on rapidly changing circumstances (e.g. during a game\/race\/match)?<\/li>\n<li>Red Bull Racing have trackside and remote teams poring over data in order to inform race strategy \u2013 are your data systems (from both a technical and employee skillset\/communication perspective) compatible with the need to take data-driven decisions in real (or near) time?<\/li>\n<li>How effective is the chain of command amongst coaches and departmental managers (or executives and engineers) \u2013 to what extent are your team given responsibility and empowered to take decisions?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20080 size-full\" src=\"\/app\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/Red-Bull-Illustration.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"990\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Looking for more performance insight?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Why not download the latest Leaders Performance Special Report?
