You often hear great leaders say that a trait of the most successful teams is that the culture is driven from within. Saracens are one of the most successful teams in modern sport, whose \u2018revolution\u2019 back in 2009 brought about a fresh organisational approach. We explored how they instilled a new culture, how they continuously drive behaviours and the role the athletes play in driving this from within.<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key takeaways:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Attribute behaviours to each of your organisation\u2019s values. In Saracens\u2019 case, those values are honesty, discipline, work rate and humility. The club lives and breathes these values on a daily basis \u2013 honesty, for example, involves embracing rather than resenting others\u2019 opinions, being honest with yourself first and to only expect when you\u2019re willing to give.<\/li>\n<li>Discipline is woven throughout the organisation \u2013 it\u2019s about knowing your individual role and responsibility, maintaining self-control and actively influencing others, doing the right thing at the right time and promoting and defending the culture at all times. For high-profile players, that extends to how they conduct themselves in daily life \u2013 one rude comment, for example, is just a tweet away from becoming an unwanted story and distraction.<\/li>\n<li>Are you willing to work as hard for this team as I am? That\u2019s the attitude towards new players joining the group. Respect is earnt by working hard, outworking the opposition and inspiring others by striving for new levels. And always be ready to do a spot of TSPDS \u2013 the s**t people don\u2019t see, or, to put it another way, the tiny, crucial things that happen on a pitch that are critical to winning but largely unseen.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, always be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. At Saracens, it\u2019s imperative to accept that the group matters more than you. And, as Fraser knows all too well, it\u2019s important to enjoy the ride. You never know when it might end.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Success cannot be judged on winning or losing alone. What matters more is understanding what created that success, and sticking to it when you aren\u2019t successful \u2014 taking the long view, having continuity and caring about the people in your organisation is paramount.<\/li>\n<li>Do you expose your next wave of talent to the elitist environment of the first team? Academy players train and eat with the first team, therefore their induction starts with senior players talking about their experience and expectations. Are you creating the right opportunities to expose talent to \u2018what right looks like\u2019 in your organisation?<\/li>\n<li>What motivates players and spurs exceptional performance is simple: each other. In the perspective of Saracens, what makes the difference is what many teams don\u2019t do: make memories and build bonds.<\/li>\n<li>The Saracens Way looks to create good people, if we create good people then we can create good rugby players &#8211; this is true for all organisations. If you create good people, who enjoy what they do, who are invested in the organisation and get on with their colleagues and on a much deeper level, the natural by-product is higher performance.<\/li>\n<li>The Saracens Way and culture is entirely based around the four values of: Honesty, Discipline, Work Rate and Humility. Do you ensure that the values such as these are lived day in day out?
