Within this, we focused on understanding how machine learning and other technologies are impact performance, as well as how certain creative and innovative thinking can provide new ideas surrounding the most pressing challenges in the space.<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key takeaways:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are still significant layers of tradition and dogma in sport to be overcome before AI is embraced across the board. But nobody ever responds to the question, \u2018why are you good at your job\u2019, with the response, \u2018because I\u2019m good at decision making\u2019. AI simply enables humans to make better decisions.<\/li>\n<li>Humans reduce complexity in decision making processes because of cognitive limitations, but machines, programmed by humans of course, have limitations too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Humans tend to decide on and pursue courses of action that satisfy the minimum requirements necessary to achieve a particular goal. This helps to explain why computer-derived recommendations may differ systematically from those made by humans. Also, these differences do not always provide evidence of sub-par human performance \u2013 as both approaches sample different pieces of information from a given scenario, they are effectively considering different constructs.<\/li>\n<li>The success of any innovations requires consideration of not only traditional measures of success, but also relative improvement to existing practices, \u2018operational compatibility\u2019, and user feedback.<\/li>\n<li>Domain experts in sport should not also be expected to be decision-making experts. Increases in both the volume and quality of data, combined with faster computing means that the way in which many organisational decisions can now be made is different.<\/li>\n<li>The rationality of decisions should be considered in context of the environmental and cognitive constraints acting upon the decision-maker.<\/li>\n<li>Humans construct simplified models of scenarios in order to manage them cognitively. Thus they may behave entirely rationally relative to this model.
