Performance Meg Popovic and Aaron Williamon, the Professor Performance Science at the Royal College of Music on sustainable performance and wellbeing.<\/p>\n                            \n                                                                <div class=\"video video__inline\">\n                                        <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/302135091\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\"><\/iframe>\n                                    <\/div>\n                            \n                            \n                                                            <div class=\"es-section__text content-area\">\n                                    <p><h4>In this session we explored the diverse worlds of ice hockey and music to learn about their respective processes behind athlete and performer wellbeing, and the relationship with the quest for sustainable performance. We discussed themes such as vulnerability, buy-in, approaches to emotional health and stress management and how to prepare for the pressures of elite performance.<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key takeaways:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For both organisations the definition of \u2018wellbeing\u2019 is still emerging and being shaped \u2013 and that may always be the case. Popovic put it this way: \u201cWe\u2019re playing with it and creating it through the lens of each person. It\u2019s mental health connected to personal fulfilment, connected to your aptitude on the ice and off the ice.\u201d The foundational base, however, is the overarching organisational culture. The Maple Leafs are effectively conducting a department-by-department pressure audit, to better understand specific stresses and challenges. \u201cThe safe space of the culture will over time pay dividends\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Just like sport, the music business is a stressful place: Williamon, a trumpet player, reeled off a couple of stark stats, notably that anywhere between 70%-80% of professional musicians suffer from some performance-related pain or injury. Anywhere between 15% and 20% have debilitating performance anxiety.<\/li>\n<li>Technology is allowing simulation to be used in an increasingly valuable way: the Royal College of Music, for example, now\u00a0has a designated simulation space, complete with backstage manager, green room, stage call and virtual, interactive audience, where musicians can replicate the pressure environment of a big performance and help break the habit about thinking negatively about it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Performance needs to be viewed through a wider, holistic lens. As such, athletes &amp; performers need to be provided with the psychological tools to tackle the challenge of performing in the spotlight in a healthy and constructive way.<\/li>\n<li>People can be influenced on their pathway towards elite performance by a range of interpersonal catalysts (e.g. body size) and environmental catalysts (from where does their motivation stem?). A teaching curriculum needs to integrate such thinking in order to maximise development opportunities.<\/li>\n<li>A one size fits all approach towards wellbeing and the development of performance does not work. Each sport, age group and environmental context requires a different approach. How do we create a framework as a foundation, which can then be tailored depending on the above factors.<\/li>\n<li>There are challenges with monitoring wellbeing and other performance indicators. Sport is often not perceived to be a safe space to expose their vulnerability, especially due to its high pressure, high stakes environment. Consider that if players are stressed or under pressure, they are more than likely not going to tell the truth.<\/li>\n<li>When thinking about your organisation\u2019s approaches to wellbeing, look at it through the lens of performance improvement.
