In this session we explored the challenges of implementing new ideas in new environments with different resource levels, as well as people and athletes with different skillsets. Is there an art to making it a success? How do you implement both new and traditional ideas from other sports to drive performance in your new environment?<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key takeaways:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take time to understand the sport you work in, and its structures. Find a way to involve multiple stakeholders \u2013 especially the senior leaders \u2013 to define and spotlight a \u201cmouthwatering\u201d long-term vision.<\/li>\n<li>Seek out \u2018wise owls\u2019 \u2013 those people who have a knack for explaining complex sports in simple terms.<\/li>\n<li>Identify the three or four levers that can do the most to effect success and pull as long and hard on those as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The skill of learning from other models and environments is identifying exactly what can be transferred. Ask yourself \u2018what elements and crossover of best practice can be transferred to our environment and used in our culture?\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Innovation should not be confused with gambling on a long shot. Questions need to be answered with rigour. Success often follows courageous decision-making, calculated planning, and specific execution. Transformative change does not happen on a whim.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain a healthy thirst for learning. Those organisations who remain high performing have a desire to learn from everything. Engineering curiosity is crucial for future performance breakthroughs.<\/li>\n<li>Utilise connections and the power of your networks. Constantly push the envelope by questioning how you can improve. Never be afraid to invite experts from other domains in to offer a fresh lens and provide new ideas on solutions and challenges.<\/li>\n<li>Pull on individual, sport-specific expertise from within your organisation.
