We explored their approaches to innovation and creativity, with a particular focus on the involvement of performance sciences in circus and circus art, how to implement change from a psychologically safe environment to a risk friendly one and the combination between data and emotional growth whilst prepping for future creative projects.<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key takeaways:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Find the edge of an individual\u2019s comfort zone by asking: \u2018what are you avoiding, not because you\u2019re not skilled enough, but because it makes you uncomfortable?\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Your job as a leader is to gradually increase the difficulty level of a particular task or environment until the performer begins to feel comfortable, expanding out their comfort zone through experiential action.<\/li>\n<li>Movement improvisation is a proven method for encouraging emotional growth. By creating a \u2018no rules, no judgements\u2019 environment, using a challenging but appreciative mentality, performers open up and learn to take risks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The way in which we work is as critical to success as what we actually do. Are we truly communicating and collaborating? Do we demonstrate trust\/respect for those we work with? Do we challenge ourselves and each other?<\/li>\n<li>How far are you willing to go before evaluating \u2018did it work\u2019? Are you agile enough to be able to assess the impact of your change process before the investment becomes so great you can\u2019t afford for it not to work?<\/li>\n<li>To design a risk friendly environment, dynamical system theory principles are useful. By creating chaos in a system people are forced in between two stability states. Practising or working in this meta stable region helps people develop new stability zones which increase their repertoire of thoughts or actions.<\/li>\n<li>As a leader you must track people\u2019s discomfort level. To do so, ask the question \u201cWhat is this thing you know you could do, but you are not doing because it makes you too uncomfortable?\u201d Once the discomfort zone is identified, enter the void and walk them through discomfort progressively. When, it finally feels comfortable, pick another performance aspect to keep expending the comfort zone.<\/li>\n<li>To really understand the why is to also be sure we understand the nature of the challenges that other stakeholders are faced with.
