We also discussed the \u2018Tacit Knowledge\u2019 transfer problem and understanding how to articulate what right and wrong looks like.<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Takeaways<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Legacy should be seen and used as a platform, not an anchor. In the high performance world (sport and non-sport) there are too many leaders and athletes\/performers who assume the system works because they\u2019ve come through it.<\/li>\n<li>What is right? What does it feel like? You can improve strengths much more than weaknesses, so it\u2019s important to anchor athletes to how they feel and what they want to achieve.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t just focus on \u2018winning\u2019, you may fail to influence your athletes and staff in a positive way in the long term.<\/li>\n<li>Your athletes should own the problem. As an athlete gets older, they need to know and understand this. However, an athlete knowing something isn\u2019t the same as knowing why it matters.<\/li>\n<li>Detect, Recognize, React, Respond (+Recover) \u2013 can increase your capacity in being able to work and partner with a bigger pool of experts in developing your athletes and staff.<\/li>\n<li>Jumping the gap from operator to coach can be very difficult. Do not underestimate it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1. Are you building contingencies or capacity? For fixed problems contingency planning can promote agility by creating habits that reduce cognitive load. For adaptive problems however, it can also create complacency and overconfidence by an over reliance on habit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">2. Make the athlete own the problem. Older athletes\u2019 brains need to both know and understand. The athlete knowing the name of a thing isn\u2019t the same as actually knowing why the thing exists and why it matters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">3. Make the tacit explicit using a shared language: By benchmarking our language to the recognized neuroscientific stages of Detect, Recognize, React and Respond, plus the more complex \u201crecover\u201d we can partner with a greater number of experts in developing the human factor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">4. What does \u201cright\u201d feel like? We can improve our strengths much more than our weaknesses. Make sure to anchor athletes to how they feel and their performance objective, when performing well. If you only focus on the outcome objective \u201cwinning,\u201d we may fail to positively influence the player for the long term.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">5. Beware the legacy fallacy: Your legacy should be a platform not an anchor.
