In conversation with the new Chief Executive of Lewes FC, Maggie Murphy

Maggie Murphy on her sports industry story, including her recent career milestone and appointment as CEO at the community-owned non-profit football club, Lewes FC.

Maggie’s background in anti-corruption and human rights has shaped and informed her vision of what football (her driving passion) can be. She’s been at Lewes FC since 2019, having previously been the club’s General Manager before taking up the CEO role in July 2021. Maggie has seen the club progress with its professionalism and performance – both on and off the field – and has further ambitions to grow the club’s commitment for equality, diversity and inclusivity.

Maggie was selected for this Chain Conversation by Tony Burnett, CEO of Kick it Out, with topics discussed including:

  • How Lewes FC always back up gestures and statements with action
  • The club’s response to Covid highlighting the resilience and commitment of their players
  • How their academy places emphasis on players first as people
  • Their unique and ground-breaking equal funding of the women’s and men’s game
  • The inspiration Maggie has taken from both the Dalai Lama and Dolly Parton

Chain Conversations is part of the Leaders Meet: Diversity Series, in partnership with Facebook.

The programme brings together leaders from a variety of backgrounds across professional sport to share their personal stories of leadership and to reflect on their own career journeys, pinpointing the peaks and troughs, the helps and hinderances along the way.

Every other week the previous interviewee will become the interviewer as we hear inspiring stories from aspiring and senior leaders within the professional sports industry.

The aim is to inspire, to energise, and to showcase why diverse thinking – and diverse opportunity – makes for better business across sport and beyond.
