We thank our partners, Meta, Wasserman, Deltatre, Nielsen, TEAM Marketing, Prime Video, and IMG, for aligning with the series to champion executives within sport to come together to drive diversity within the industry, accelerate the pace of change and inspire the next generation.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>WHAT&#8217;S NEW IN 2023?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Last year saw the introduction of a number of new offerings within the Series, such as the Leaders Diversity Club and The Leaders in EDI Podcast, which saw the <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/sport-business\/leaders-events\/leaders-meet-diversity\/#:~:text=The%20Leaders%20Meet%3A%20Diversity%20Series,the%20next%20generation%20of%20executives.\"><strong>Leaders Meet: Diversity Series<\/strong><\/a> back in full swing, following two years of being heavily restricted by the global pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>This year will see the <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/sport-business\/podcasts?_sf_s=leaders%20in%20edi\"><strong>Leaders In EDI podcast<\/strong><\/a> move from a monthly to seasonal format, taking deep dives into varying themes and topics across EDI, and featuring guests across sport and a variety of other neighbouring industries. You\u2019ll see a continuation of various in-person touchpoints across the series calendar, starting with our marking of <strong>International Women\u2019s Day<\/strong>, on <strong>March 30th at Meta\u2019s Brock Street Offices, London.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>WHAT TO KEEP YOUR (EDI&#8217;S) EYES ON<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Economic Uncertainty<\/strong> \u2013 Giving the challenges being faced financially by a number of organisations across different industries, we need to be mindful that EDI efforts and agenda\u2019s don\u2019t fall off the priority list. In an attempt to recession-proof the company, reducing EDI efforts could be deemed a go-to solution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Working creatively with different people from different backgrounds<\/strong> \u2013 As we look to continue strides and lengths to bring about equity, diversity and greater inclusion, we\u2019ll need to open-up the individuals that we bring into the conversation and subsequent actions. As we seek to engage people in meaningful dialogue along with education, we need to ensure this is \u2018All\u2019 people<\/p>\n<p><strong>Support for DEI Leaders<\/strong> \u2013 Having a working remit focused within diversity, equity and inclusion, can see those individuals faced with the continued burden of expectation, by being the only one to who is solely focused on advancing EDI in an organisation. Wales men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams said in a joint statement: &#8220;We hope that this will allow future generations of boys and girls to see that there is equality across Welsh international football, which is important for society as a whole.&#8221; This landmark deal comes after the Men\u2019s team agreed to take a 25% pay cut to enable the Women to have a 25% increase, embodying their mantra of \u2018Together Stronger\u2019.<br \/>\n&#8211; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sarah-evans-\/\">Sarah Evans<\/a>, Senior Community &amp; Account Executive<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the wake of the news that <strong>World Athletics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/athletics\/64373487\">plans to continue allowing transgender women to compete in the female category<\/a><\/strong>, there is much to unpack when it comes to the impacts and ramifications of the organisation\u2019s \u201cpreferred solution\u201d. World Athletics President Lord Coe last year stressed the importance of being \u2018guided by science\u2019 and that \u2018fairness is non-negotiable\u2019, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/blog\/2023\/jan\/23\/world-athletics-transgender-regulations-see-scientific-rigour-give-way-to-a-fudge\">proposed guidelines arguably do not fulfil these criteria<\/a>. As we continue to strive for a world where trans athletes are included and their very existence isn\u2019t a topic of debate, what is clear is that further research into trans athletes and with differences of sexual development is vital.<br \/>\n&#8211; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/emily-tuson-836557175\/\">Emily Tuson<\/a>, Marketing Executive<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Former Crawley manager<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2023\/jan\/18\/fa-panel-condemned-after-finding-john-yems-to-be-not-a-conscious-racist\"><strong>John Yems was recently issued with a 15month ban from football<\/strong><\/a> after being found guilty of breaching the FA\u2019s rulings on multiple occasions in relation to discrimination and racist abuse. The ban, set to run till June 2024, has been met with calls of outrage at what seems to be a very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/64374938\">lenient punishment for Yems actions<\/a>, which were found to be \u2018not conscious racism\u2019. Yems, who admitted one charge, but was then found guilty of a further 11, has again brought into question the governance of the decision makers within football, and the message against racism and discrimination. These sentiments are felt in the words by VERSUS&#8217;s Editorial &amp; Brand Officer, Mayowa Quadri: <a href=\"https:\/\/versus.uk.com\/2023\/01\/need-stop-making-excuses-racism\/\">\u201cFewer reports. Fewer empty words. Fewer campaigns for the sake of campaigns. More real work. More accountability. Please.<\/a>\u201d<br \/>\n<em>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/javan-odegah-94784498\/\">Javan Odegah<\/a>, Strategic Account Manager<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Publisher Stephen Rubin has asserted that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2023\/01\/21\/diversity-box-ticking-could-cost-us-next-john-grisham-says-top\/\">\u201cbizarre reliance on diversity\u201d is ironically making books less diverse<\/a><\/strong>. He asks: \u201cIf you\u2019re publishing mostly books by people of colour and people who are gay, then where\u2019s the diversity?\u201d As <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/sport-business\/podcasts\/podcast-leaders-in-edi-nielsen-sports-lynsey-douglas-bcoms-founder-leon-mann\/\">Leon Mann stated on our podcast<\/a> last year, everybody including straight, cis, white males contribute to diversity. However, Rubin is incorrect that only BIPOC\u2019s and LGBTQ+ authors are having their books published; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/industry-news\/publisher-news\/article\/87923-prh-contributors-skew-heavily-white.html\">Penguin Random House found<\/a> that white contributors accounted for a huge 76% of recent books, and only 16% contributors were LGBTQ+. That\u2019s an overwhelming majority of straight, white creators; and to quote Rubin: \u201cI don\u2019t care who you are. Nobody wants to only read those kinds of books.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jadeamies\/\">Jade Amies<\/a>, Content Producer<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goal.com\/en-gb\/news\/sara-bjork-gunnarsdottir-landmark-maternity-case-lyon\/blta1d340dc40105b60\"><strong>Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir has won her landmark case against Olympique Lyonnais<\/strong><\/a> who failed to pay her full salary during her pregnancy. This marks a significant step forward for female footballers, who can go through their pregnancies knowing the minimum terms they\u2019re entitled to and that they will have the support of Fifa. While there are implications to be considered for individual athletes and for athletes with sponsorships, Sara\u2019s experiences not only highlights the encouraging progress that is being made through protection policies but also that we have a long way to go yet. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theplayerstribune.com\/posts\/sara-bjork-gunnarsdottir-soccer-pregnancy\">her piece for The Players Tribune<\/a> Sara wrote, \u201cThe victory felt bigger than me. It felt like a guarantee of financial security for all players who want to have a child during their career.\u201d We must work for a future where victories aren\u2019t needed.<br \/>\n<em>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rachel-woodland-98218662\/\">Rachel Woodland<\/a>, Senior Membership Success Manager<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong>COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ibb.co\/T8Y78DT\/ACE.jpg\" alt=\"ACE\" width=\"316\" height=\"211\" border=\"0\" \/><em>This month we&#8217;re shining a light on the Ace Programme, working to improve Afro-Caribbean engagement in cricket, and their Impact report. Over to Chevy Green, of Surrey County Cricket Club, Director of ACE programmes&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><br \/>\n<\/em>&#8220;Our vision when we set up the ACE Programme was to tackle the huge decline by 75% of the black British community in the game, however our journey over the last few years has come to mean so much more. Our team who have engaged over 10,000 young people working in inner cities and mainly deprived communities have come to see the bigger picture of what sport can do and also some of what our sport, Cricket, needs to be doing more of. We truly believe cricket has the ability to be representative of our society and support young people from diverse and lower socioeconomic backgrounds to thrive.
