Dr. Simon Timson is Manchester City Football Club’s Performance Director and a member of the Leadership Team responsible for driving the Club’s on-pitch performance to consistently challenge for major trophies. Simon is responsible for driving player development and team performance through the delivery of science, medicine and performance analyses across the men and women’s 1st Team and Academies.
He moved to City from the Lawn Tennis Association where he put in place a 10-year player development and performance plan which, has just celebrated the emergence of Emma Raducanu and Cameron Norrie as Grand Slam and ATP Masters champions respectively.
Simon was Director of Performance at UK Sport (2013 – 2016) overseeing record medal hauls at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016 and Sochi Olympic Winter Games in 2014. Great Britain’s success at Rio 2016 was unprecedented – finishing 2nd in the medal tables and becoming the only nation ever to be more successful after hosting. In 2017, Simon co-authored the Amazon best selling book, the Talent Lab, which tells the story behind Britain’s Rio 2016 success, and how any team, business or individual can learn from it.
Prior to this Simon helped drive a period of unprecedented success for the Test, ODI and T20 England Cricket Teams (2006-2012) during which all three reached the top of ICC world rankings. He started his career in elite sport as Performance Director at British Skeleton (2000-2006) and led the Team to Olympic medals in 2002 and 2006 whilst also identifying 2010 Gold medallist, Amy Williams. He is now Honorary Vice-President of the British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association.
Simon also has a PhD in Psychology and his contribution to British sporting success was recognised by both the Universities of Bath and Exeter with the award honorary doctorates in 2018.
