Eileen Strempel is the Inaugural Dean of UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music and a Professor in the School of Education and Information Studies.
She has led a new school driven by a strong commitment to inclusive excellence at our nation’s number one public university. Recently formed with a generous $30M donation from trumpeter Herb Alpert, the institution is the first and only school of music in the University of California System.
A Presidential Scholar, Strempel is a nationally recognized higher education scholar, with a special interest in equitable student success and transfer students. Strempel views access to superb public education as one of the principal social justice issues of our time and her most recent book with co-author Stephen J. Handel is entitled: Beyond Free College: Making Higher Education Work for 21st Century Students.
Under her leadership, the school has seen transformative student growth of 65% in response to the introduction of innovative degree offerings tailored to the challenges and opportunities of the 21st-century. Strempel received her Bachelor of Music from Eastman School of Music and her doctorate from Indiana University.
