The Leaders Performance Institute’s weekly review of appointments across global sport.
There has been plenty of activity in Major League Baseball, as all teams look to finalise their coaching staffs for 2019. We begin at the Houston Astros, where Don Kelly has been hired as First Base Coach and Josh Miller as the team’s Bullpen Coach. Alex Cintron has shifted to Hitting Coach from First Base and will share that role with Troy Snitker.
The Baltimore Orioles have a new General Manager after Mike Elias was promoted from Assistant GM and Head of Player Development & Minor League Operations. One of his first actions saw Sig Mejdal come in as Assistant GM from the Astros.
Over on the West Coast, the Seattle Mariners have hired Perry Hill as Infield Coach and Jared Sandberg as Field Coordinator.
Down in Florida, Rodney Linares has joined the Tampa Bay Rays as Third Base Coach, replacing Matt Quatraro, who has been promoted to Bench Coach.
We switch to college football, where Les Miles has been installed as Head Coach of the University of Kansas football program. He has signed a five-year contract as Jeff Long looks to revive the team’s fortunes after an unsuccessful spell under David Beaty.
From football to soccer, English Premier League side Burnley have made Mike Rigg their first-ever Technical Director. In career spanning more than 30 years, Rigg has also worked at Manchester City and the Football Association.
Burnley’s Premier League counterparts Watford have also been busy. Andy Scott has been appointed the Hornet’s UK Football Recruitment Director. His focus will be on talent within the Home Nations and the club’s academy.
Elsewhere in England, Saracens of rugby union’s Gallagher Premiership have made Nick Kennedy their Head of Player Recruitment. Kennedy had been serving the Barnet-based club on a consultancy basis but has now penned a deal through to the 2022 season.
On to hockey and the Edmonton Oilers, who have announced Ken Hitchcock as Head Coach. The team parted ways with Todd McClellan after an underwhelming start to the NHL season.
Down to the Caribbean, where Nic Pothas has been appointed Interim Head Coach of the West Indies men’s national cricket team. He will take the reins for their tour of Bangladesh after Stuart Law left for Middlesex.
There has also been movement in netball as Dan Ryan has been appointed Head Coach of the Northern Ireland national team. He takes over from Elaine Rice, who recently stepped down, and will begin work in December ahead of the 2019 World Cup.
