THE PLANET LEAGUE

The Planet League is a behaviour-tech platform using the power of sport to drive action on climate change. We bridge the gap between climate change and people taking personal action. Fans sign up to represent their club and score goals in fixtures against other clubs by completing green actions. We list a hundred activities around food, energy, water, transport, waste and nature. For a valid goal, the fan has to upload a photograph of the activity which we check with our “VAR” system.

We have proven people will take green actions for their clubs that they would otherwise not have considered doing. We’ve recruited 73 clubs including 18 from the Premier League, reached over 5,000 households, approximately 18,000 fans, who have taken 77,000 verified “green” actions. This has resulted in reductions of about 360 tonnes of CO2.

We’ve been featured on BBC’s The One Show, Sky News, Sky Sports and ITV. Boris Johnson has visited one of our participating schools. This mainstream publicity helps to normalise green behaviours.

The Planet League operates via a digital platform engaging fans in their day-to-day lives, not just the few lucky enough to go to a match. We have launched a new concept– Scope F – the carbon footprint of fans which sports clubs can influence. Scope F opens up a whole new arena for meaningful climate action by sports clubs.

Our vision is that we help inspire generations of sports fans to live sustainably – first for the love of their club, then for the love of the planet and then because that is the fulfilling way to live.

There are 3.5 billion football fans to inspire to live sustainably and then lead others, contributing to form greener, more resilient communities across the world.
