Abhijit, a former Indian volleyball captain, initiated the Brahmaputra Volleyball League (BVL) and the Assam Volleyball Mission 100. He won eight international medals in his time with the national team, and he was the first player from the northeast to represent and captain the team.
BVL started with 50 teams in 2020, and has now grown to over 300 teams from 100 villages, making it one of India’s largest grassroots sports initiatives. It’s recognised by FIVB – the world governing body of volleyball – as the biggest grassroots volleyball league in the world.
With over 12 years of CSR experience, he has been innovating around operations and funding models. The teams and infrastructure are completely community-owned, with individuals from India and abroad pitching in to provide the required funds.
