As surfers, the ocean is our arena, our playground, our inspiration. Since 2016, WSL has remained steadfast in its focus on protecting the global ocean and driving impact through a series of sustainability commitments that have set the standard for global professional sports.

We believe sport has the power to change the world, and we are dedicated to leveraging our platform of professional surfing to not only showcase the world’s best surfers in competition, but also to showcase the world’s best surfers out of competition, working side-by-side with grassroots organizations around the world with the goal of inspiring our fans to take action to  protect and conserve our one ocean.

2022 represented an unprecedented expansion in our impact, achieved through our sustainability commitments including, being carbon neutral globally, eliminating single-serve plastics at events and investing in local communities through our annual WSL PURE Grant program. We achieved the following:

• Reduced emissions by 49% from the 2018 baseline year.
• Reduced waste by 70% from the 2018 baseline year.
• Educated over 35,000 youth around the world on cultural and environmental stewardship,
• Collected 100 tons of plastic from Indonesia’s rivers, and
• Conserved 347,291 hectares of land, including long term protection for iconic waves and surf ecosystems at Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica and Grajagan Bay, Java, Indonesia.

Because of our environmental efforts, WSL World Champion Filipe Toledo was invited to join celebrities including Ellie Goulding, Jason Momoa, Dr. Jane Goodall, Edward Norton to represent on the United Nations World Restoration Flagship Announcement. In addition, WSL was selected as a Play to Zero award winner and recognized at the 2023 Green Sports Alliance Summit as a Waste Champion (50%+ waste diversion rate) and a Play to Zero Energy Champion (100% energy reduction or offsets).
