In 2021, we recognised the opportunity to unlock the potential of the rich data available in ball and player tracking data to create a collection of new dynamic performance metrics that would revolutionise our sport’s interest and understanding.

Tennis has survived on limited data recorded by the umpire (Umpire’s chair data/Level 1 data) and data points that can be collected manually in real-time (Level 2) (e.g., the number of shots in the point). These two data sources are the basis on which “traditional statistics” (e.g., breakpoints won) have been created. However, traditional statistics are often a function of winning and do not explain how or why a player has been successful.

We believe that data can be used to deepen the connection with existing fans and attract new fans by revealing better stories behind the players and matches.

Our vision was to develop AI software that would allow us to create a unique set of metrics which engage, excite and educate, creating a new common tennis language.

The TennisViz Insights:

• Unique data points that have never been measured in tennis (e.g., the quality of each shot, whether the player is attacking, neutral, or defending, and what tactics and patterns of play a player is using).
• Capture data for every shot, providing the most comprehensive and accurate analysis. Traditional statistics focus on the outcome of the point (e.g., break points) or the last shot of the point (e.g., winner/unforced error).
• Create compelling new narratives, including player and tour averages for every TennisViz Insight.
