Advising many of the biggest names in football, including the majority of clubs in the Premier League and EFL Championship as well as leading players, coaches and agents, Alex has led the growth of Centrefield’s Employment Law practice and team, which is now established as a core practice area for the firm. He is particularly known for his expertise in the appointment and departure of coaches, executives and players, alongside the full spectrum of employee relations challenges and strategic issues that arise within professional sport.
Alex has advised on approximately 150 managerial appointments across football, spanning England, Scotland, Europe, North America and Asia. Alongside his advisory and transactional work, he has extensive experience in litigation, representing clubs in high-profile contractual, regulatory, discrimination and whistleblowing disputes, including the successful defence of several multi-million-pound claims.
Before joining Centrefield, Alex trained and qualified at Penningtons Manches before joining the specialist sports employment practice at Thomas Cooper, where his work included advising on litigation of significant legal importance and, on a pro-bono basis, supporting athletes facing anti-doping proceedings. He subsequently joined Onside Law, undertaking secondments with GWI and World Sailing, where he served as Acting Director of Legal and Governance during the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. Beyond his day-to-day practice, Alex has spent the last five years as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Northamptonshire Football Association and has previously served on Basketball England’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
Having attended his first football match at Legia Warsaw aged 7, Alex has maintained a lifelong passion for sport, both as a supporter and throughout a career spent working across the industry.
