Mike has worked at the frontier of data science and machine learning in elite sport since 2014, co-authoring numerous papers and helping translate applied research in the field into real-world performance.

Mike joined Manchester United as Director of Data & AI in April 2025 and is responsible for building the in-house data engineering, science, analytics, software engineering and AI function across the club, spanning football, commercial and wider club operations. His focus areas include advanced statistical methods and Bayesian inference, the application of insight at pace, modernisation of the club’s technology stack, and the integration of enterprise AI transformation.

He joined the club from Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, where he spent 11 years across a range of technical roles. During that period the team won eight constructors’ and drivers’ world championships, the most successful era in Formula One history. His work focused on the development of the team’s digital twin, the high-fidelity virtual simulation environment used to model and develop the car, and on advanced machine learning applied to performance optimisation. He spent nine years trackside, represented the team on the podium in Barcelona in 2020, and worked as performance engineer to Lewis Hamilton.

Mike holds a degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering with Advanced Aerodynamics from the University of Southampton, the UK’s top-ranked university for aerospace engineering, where he graduated as the top academic performer in his cohort with the Dean’s Award.
