Women’s Sport Breakfast: Supporting the Changing Life Cycle of Women in High Performance

Discover more >

The aim of the Women’s Sport Breakfast is to bring together high performance practitioners who are passionate about growing women’s sport and providing access for women in sport to network and learn from one another about the strides being made in the industry. The breakfast will be an opportunity to connect and have impactful conversations with those working on the front lines to progress women’s sports before transitioning to the Summit content.

Topic: Supporting the Life Cycle of Women in High Performance Sport

As the industry works to be more inclusive and more women athletes train and compete at an elite level during their reproductive years, there needs to be a continued understanding and consideration for how to support pregnant athletes. The experiences of elite athletes during pregnancy is vastly under-represented, but only more voices and discussions around the life cycle of a female athlete will ensure change happens. The purpose of this session is to explore the experiences of women as they navigate pregnancy, and to identify areas of support and change that are needed regarding participation during pregnancy, and the support given to them prepartum and postpartum.

We’ll be reflecting on the learnings from the previous session, and give you the opportunity to unpack them with the peers around your table. We’ll also use the insights from the session, alongside some research and skills based learning exercises, to explore ‘Leading Change’.

Continuous change is a reality of high performance sport. Some of it welcome, some of it not. Both players and staff are constantly having to get their head around a new set of circumstances, and winning depends on our ability to help people adapt quickly, and maintain motivation.

The purpose of this skills session is to increase our insights into the transition people typically move through as they adjust to a change, and what support is helpful at each stage.

Sustainable High Performance: Shifting the Dial Around Coach & Staff Wellbeing

Discover more >

The focus and attention on wellbeing in high performance sport has been significant over the last five years. We have seen some excellent work being done across sport to support our athletes with the demands of competition and preparation. However, the focus on the wellbeing of coaches and other high performance staff has been somewhat overshadowed. We are now at a crossroads and are beginning to see high profile stories of burnout and mental health strain on those supporting our athletes. The aim of this session is to provide practical insights into how we can support the sustainability of our people in what remains a high-pressure, intense industry.

We’ll take a break from listening, and give you an opportunity to engage in another interactive session, this time watching from the front and applying some of the skills in your tables.

High performing leaders initiate and engage people in high quality candid conversations that improve performance & enhance relationships. The ability to open up and engage people in high quality conversations around how we can improve performance, is one of the most important skills underpinning high performing cultures. One of those important conversations is around coach and performance staff wellbeing that we have just explored with Matti and Bill. The absence of these skills can be a huge contributor to underperformance. At the heart of most ongoing problems within an organisation is the inability of individuals with important insights, to speak openly and skilfully about the issues they see.

Often learning and development can lose focus and intent in times of pressure, so in this session, we will look to glean insights and experiences from an expert in learning who has applied some of these principles to the world of professional sport.

  • Aligning organisations’ people towards a common goal: Aligning an organisation requires a common language and a common goal. Once leaders are aligned, they can begin to influence the athletes more holistically when it comes to performance optimisation.
  • The differences: Individual sports & Team sport environments? A lot the important aspects – such as collaboration between coaches and support staff; the process for evaluation; decision making; connecting with athletes – are the same but will be conducted and delivered better in one environment, compared to the other.
  • The strengths & learnings within the differences: We’ll unpack what team sports can learn from individual sports, and vice versa.
