ReportsThis year, 10% to 15% of all corporations will need to replace the CEO. In top-level sport, football in particular, the numbers are even starker. In the 2022/23 season, the 98 clubs in the top five European football leagues used 170 managers or head coaches between them.
Anointed successor or open recruitment process; internal candidate or outside expertise; like-for-like replacement or something completely different; an agent of change or a ship steadier; a cultural fit or a culture architect. The old boss’s son or the old boss’s daughter.
(Almost) all have their merits. There is no one-size-fits all approach to succession planning. But what is clear is that there should be some planning.
And given leadership change is one of the most momentous shifts any organisation can go through, getting it right is an opportunity to evolve and improve across the board, not just a risk to be navigated.
The following report looks at approaches to succession planning and organisational design; it charts real life case studies of success and failure in succession planning; and it attempts to identify systems, structures and processes that can be implemented to ensure high performing teams and off the field.
