Pirate operators are stealing $28 billion of value from sport annually and the problem is only getting worse. As the fundamentals of the live media rights model come under fire, sport faces an existential threat, and an urgent question: act now or face a radically reworked and diminished future.

With sports broadcast distribution shifting inexorably towards streaming platforms, it has never been easier to pirate live content. The pandemic saw increases of up to 50% in the consumption of illicit live streams.

Awareness of the scale of the problem is low; so too is strategic prioritisation of action against it at many sports content entities across the world. The pirates have taken advantage, building out a sophisticated criminal ecosystem and launching IPTV platforms with tens of thousands of channels, no restrictions, and minimal costs. The legitimate operators cannot compete. And make no mistake, this is a building problem that has the potential to decimate the commercial framework that modern sports businesses are built on.

This Leaders Special Report evaluates the scale of the problem, providing answers to some fundamental questions: What is happening? Why is it happening? How is it happening? And what happens next?
