Thursday 1 July: Hitting the reset button on professional football
It’s a topic that certainly merits discussion after a tumultuous few months of powerplays and potential breakaways, not to mention the financial inequalities and pressures applied as a result of the global pandemic.
And whether it’s Super Leagues or league mergers, clubs getting more powerful, major changes in how people consume football and prospects of expansion – more games, maybe even more competitions – wherever you look, this has the feel of an important moment in football’s global development.
But what does a potential change look like? Is it time for a rethink, to rip professional football up, and start all over again? It’s a question that Ebru Köksal, Women in Football Chair, Keegan Pierce, International Development, LaLiga Global Network UK & Ireland, and Umberto Gandini, Former AS Roma CEO and President at Lega Basket A, helped us to answer, as they shared their perspectives on what could be around the corner for the beautiful game.
Elsewhere, Sports Business Journal’s Mark Burns gave a healthcheck on the sport in America, we discussed DAZN’s groundbreaking four-year-deal with Uefa for rights to the Women’s Champions League and we placed the European Championships, Wimbledon and the British Grand Prix under the microscope as fans return to stadia.
Hosted by Leaders Head of Content, David Cushnan and Editor-at-Large, James Emmett on 1 July 2021. The next edition will be broadcast live on LinkedIn and Twitter on 28 July, at 15.00 BST.
