The Team Sky Principal on the evolution of his leadership style, reframing challenges in order to fuel success, and the allure of the new.
Recognised as a sports performance pioneer, Brailsford has worked in cycling management for over 20 years, and has enjoyed a number of highlights. In 2008, in his role as Performance Director at British Cycling, he led the British Olympic cycling team to an unprecedented eight gold medals at the Beijing Games. He replicated this feat in 2012, leading Team GB to another eight gold medals at the London Olympics.
Despite a challenging start, Brailsford was able to bring a winning formula with him to Team Sky, which has become a dominant force in road cycling since its foundation in 2010, racking up six Grand Tour victories under Brailsford’s guidance.
Brailsford received his knighthood for services to cycling and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games on 28th February 2013.
In this short interview, recorded backstage at Leaders Week London, 2017, Brailsford discusses the origin of the marginal gains mantra and what he feels about it having stuck to him, the challenge of maintaining and renewing professional motivation and the allure of the new, the evolution of his leadership during his tenure at Team Sky, and how he’s tried to reframe recent challenges to the benefit of the team.
